Got to hear him play once. Outdoor wine & jazz festival in Charleston, WV. Huge thunderstorm was rolling in when his set started, made it through probably 4-5 tunes before it became too dangerous to continue. Worth it. RIP.

What a phenomenal musician and proud father of the most incredible family of musicians.
Very inspirational and an amazing teacher.
This is incredibly sad. Prayers go out to his family.

R.I.P. Mr. Marsalis.

I had the great, great privilege of meeting him several years ago, such a nice man and his legacy is giant.

Oh, no.

My wife and I always made it a point to see him when we went to New Orleans.

We have to strap in for a lot of bad news.

I saw the NPR story on his death.

Thank you for sharing the NPR story. It's one of those tough losses for so many, especially for his family and the city of New Orleans. Three people got me interested in jazz--Tony Dagradi, Clyde Kerr, and Ellis Marsalis. Mr. Kerr passed away years ago, and now to lose Mr. Marsalis compounds the feeling of loss. I remember the first time I met him was at the NOCCA orientation session. He was sitting with Jason and was as kind as a man can be. He then started playing the piano and I was simply taken to a new level of appreciation. He'll rest in piece . . . and have an amazing musical celebration of his life.
