Guitar and bass effects seem to be well documented as far as who used what, but sax players and their processors of choice is all but impossible to nail down - well at least in my searches.

I seem to be getting called on to play more R&R/pop stuff so I think I need to familiarize myself with what people are using to cop these tones. I know much of it is from style and setup, and the individual player and what they bring to it, but processing is almost impossible to get by without.

What are you guys using when you play out? Rackmount? pedal?

Do you leave it up to the sound guy to get the tone with onboard effects or do you carry a sound rig on gigs just for the sax?

I'm the bass player in the specific band I'm talking about, but the lead singer is also a bassist, and would like to add sax to this group. I can play the charts - well create the charts then play them, but the electronics I need assistance with. I don't think my bass pod is appropriate for processing an alto.

Any help guys?

I like and use the Bose T1 digital mixer. It weighs about a pound or less, fits on a mic stand, is very small, and sounds great. It has every fx you could ever want: eq, 4 inputs, all easily programable, storable, recallable and controllable, and too much more to mention here. I replaced an 80 lb, $10,000 live performance rack with this little thing, and it sounds almost as good. Pricing is $450-$500. You use it as a sub-mixer to the main mixer, or as a main mixer if you just need 3-4 inputs. This gives you total control of your sound from where you're standing, including level (mains and monitor), fx, eq, etc.). You just plug your mic into it, and go out of it into the main mixer. It sounds much better than any foot pedal for sax, and as good as all but the most expensive/high end boxes that you could fill a heavy rack with. Just Google Bose T1 for all the details.

Sorry, I can't help you since I avoid trying to create that nasty 80's sound. But any decent quality effects unit from Lexicon, TC Electronic or Yamaha will have plenty of sounds to choose from.
