I found a 1958 Kohlert EDGWARE alto on eBay, serial number 578xx. Look at the engraving of the name on the bell... I can now see why people thought it said FOGWARE (because FDGWARE doesn't make ANY sense at all)... The TOP line of the "T" in "The", extends all the way across the top of the name, and the BOTTOM line of the "E" in "EDGWARE", extends all the way across the bottom of the name. So, "The FOGWARE" mystery has been solved..... TAA DAAA..... :D

I really like this horn, but I have my heart set on a '57 tenor... ;)

Just ran across this thread. Damn shame no one bought it. It is a beauty. After about 5yrs of owning it my 57 alto is finally getting repadded. It was a killer horn before, with Selmer metal domed resonators, it ought to be amazing

55-56-75-58....

Yes - the 'non-numbered' Kohlert models don't fetch the same price. Last two '57 altos sold on Ebay for $522 (shot pads) and $587 (no promise on pads). '55s do almost as well. Maybe Kohlert should have labeld these Edgewares as '58s. With that listing in Europe, I don't know what typical price would be. Are Kohlerts more common there?

BTW, I have a Kohlert '57 alto relisted on Marketplace. Likely not original lacquer - but looks very good and is in great playing condition. $525.

Are Kohlerts more common in Europe ?

Surprisingly, no. At least that's what I observe on the marketplace, i.e. ebay Germany, UK and United Kingdom, plus www.marktplaats.nl and Flohmarkt at saxophon.com. It seems they appear as often on ebay in the US as over here. In Europe, however, the older models, e.g. VKS, clearly appear more often.
