Hi there,

Figured I should just give my two cents about this Son of Slant mouthpiece I got about a month ago from Drake. I'm playing a Son of Slant Large Chamber 8 on a Buescher true tone curved soprano with rico plasticover 3 reeds.

I recently purchased an old Buescher true tone curved soprano, and in that process noticed my mouthpieces from the previous soprano (modern selmer) did not work as well on this buescher. I heard good things about Drake's SoS piece and gave it a try.

In short: This is a really fantastic mouthpiece. Super FUN to play, similar ease of playing as the Theo Wanne Gaia soprano piece but with a more flexible sound. However, both pieces definitely have a quality of character to them, but this Drake is a bit more flexible whereas I found the gaia to be much less so. After adjusting to the large chamber soprano feel, this piece became much easier to play, with really great intonation and super great response. Just enough resistance to have something to play against, but certainly still a pretty free blowing piece.
Very good volume but not a blaster piece, however I myself am a bit of a blaster (do a lot of "free jazz" and improv gigs) and found this piece could totally hold its own in that situation.

Negative:
that little ring ligature they include is pretty lame I think. First of all, its some very weak plastic or something, doesn't give you much choice in terms of ligature placement and, I found it kind of dulled the sound. The piece is an odd in-between size, so a lot of regular HR soprano ligs will NOT fit, however I found a few odd ligs that do fit and it made a bit difference in the sound.

if you're more into the Bechet / Lacy / Coxhill / etc vibe on soprano, this piece is totally worth checking out. Totally reasonable price, arrived quickly, looks beautiful, etc. Not an oboe-sounding piece that's for sure. Dark and full sound, old school soprano sound. This piece plays so easy I'm thinking of getting mine opened to a 9, which Drake says he'll do free of charge if you buy a piece from him.

I have on SOS 5, it lokks much less opening than your 8.. I am using a 2.5 Java red Vandoren reed. I just love it. personally i agrre, this plastic ring ligature is not my favourite......but it works, generally i do not like ring ligature, i do not have the possibiliti to change to position of them ....

I happily use a Marc Jean lig on mine - one that was purchased to go with my Soprano Planet Via Coro mouthpiece. Also prefer reeds by Marca or Alexander, and use the Marca American Vintage especially when I want a darker sound.
