Different styles for different regions

I'm hoping that someone whos studied jazz history, or knows something about this could help me. My question was sparked by reading Tim Price's post in the George Garzone thread.

What are the characteristics of different styles of players from different cities/reigons?

eg. George Garzone is part of the Bostotonian style, a wide open mouthpiece with a roof shingle for a reed.
