Hi all,

Just came across a very nice Dex clip on youtube and wanted to share it here. Looks like Dex talks Swedish (or is it Danish?) in this clip. Looks also like he plays on a brand new Otto Link, so it must have been recorded after his Dukoff mouthpiece was stolen in 1964. Dex sounds a bit stuffy in this clip, could be the (new) mouthpiece, or a stuffy reed ofcourse . The trumpet solo of Benny Bailey is killing (starts at 5:28).

or

Enjoy :)!

Thanks, man. I just love Dexter Gordon. He's probably my favourite sax player, and I love a lot of them.

Too bad that Benny Bailey had to make most of his mature career in Europe. Well, not too bad for him, but too bad that he couldn't have that kind of a career in the US and also that American jazz fans didn't get the exposure to him that they might otherwise had. I wasn't really aware of him until I moved to Germany and then it was, damn, this guy plays!

Thanks for the link.

Glad you liked it Gary :).

I also love most of the stuff of Dexter, but am also very fond of (good) trumpet playing. I've seen Benny Bailey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny_Bailey) a few times live in The Netherlands, where he lived the last part of his life. He always played with power, intention and attitude. He sounded for me something in between early Dizzy, Clark Terry and Charlie Shavers.

Amazing to hear him speak ... whatever. Danish seems quite likely. What can I add ? His laid back and unrushed playing is unequaled and unmistakable. The epitome of jazz.
Thank PB for the link.

He does not sound stuffy to me, sounds like the classic big fat LTD sound, all of the flavor, none of the calories.

As always, thank you Mr Peebee! Thank you too Gary for the information on Benny Bailey. I found an interesting article about him, Obscure Trumpet Masters #5 - Benny Bailey. This article references the clip Mr Peebee posted and another clip - this time at Montreaux with Les McCann and Eddie Harris for the Swiss Movement album - quite an album and quite a clip! ...

Indeed not really stuffy Larry, just a bit 'less open sound' than what I'm used to for Dex (could also be the recording ofcourse).

Check for instance this clip (posted before) to compare:

Thanks Mr. LampLight for those very interesting links :).
