Any thoughts on the result of delacquering a neck that was relacquered some time ago? Wondering if the result would be darker or brighter...
(this is on a MArk VI neck by the way)

It would be darker, then, depending on the environment, would probably develop a red patina.

yea.. one of those again.. You can think about it like when you wear a pair of gloves and do somethings and then u take the gloves off and do something... it's totally differnt. I dont want to get into it.. or else i'm going to have high blood pressure. It'll be just free-er and the sound won't be as focussd but i think it'll be abit warmer too (slightly brighter). You can listen to Eric marienthal and hear how his sound is because he plays on a delauqered M6alto.

Hmmm... it probably has nothing to do with that metal Beechler he plays on...

i think he means what the result would be in terms of sound/tone/response....
Oh:shock:, in that case, very little. I have a MK VI alto that the lacquer has mostly worn off the neck, and it still sounds and plays about the same as it did when it was new. I, however, am much older, and play much differently than I did then.

yeah, to clarify by darker or brighter I was talking about the tone, not the visual color of the neck. Just musing about a neck I am trying, its actually much more free blowing than my stock neck already, and fairly bright so it doesn't need much if anything in that direction.

Oh yes, I forgot--what do you mean by "one of those again" nature color? I tend to think that the interior of the neck is what determines the response and tone, I have a bare brass neck on another horn that is very dark so go figure...I was curious what others thought though...

IIRC, NatureColor is in the 'materials make a difference' camp.

a neck without lacquer don´t sounds warmer but you can get the feeling that it´s more resonant that one with lacquer.
I have today brushed 2 necks a vintage one, big bore. No idea what maker and a vintage Yanagisawa, both tenor necks.
after this a have covered the vintage neck with transparent lacquer. seem like a ref v54! beautyfull.
How it sounds? I must wait until the Aristocrate I is ready from the doc (I have brushed it too)

I believe that it wouldn't matter at all, however , can you please record the sound before and after? Countless such arguments are discussed here but very little evidence is ever produced each and every of the ways to make the point which one wishes to make.

... and make sure that you don't change anything else in or on the neck when you delacquer it lest you confound the findings. One thing that WILL make a difference is cleaning the inside of the neck of all its accumulated crud and cleaning out the octave pip.
