I'm driving to Chicago from St. Louis for this show. First time to see Lieb since Masterclass 2010.

I think this is the 8th time seeing him since 1986. I am looking forward to it with completely new ears and sense of what music is and my place in it.

Feel free to come out and enjoy the show with me and maybe some friends and students from St. Louis.

What time are you going and how will we recognize you if we go? I might be able to make it.

Well if you go to my website you can see a picture of me. www.christopherbraig.com

I'll send my cel number to anyone who wants to hang. If we can get a couple people we could all meet somewhere for a Chicago Dog or something and hang out. I'm down.

Hey vonbraig, sounds like a good time! I don't know if I can make it, but wanted to post some info for all who can.

Firstly, a slight correction on the date. The Dave Leibman Quartet will be playing Friday 10/28 from 9pm to 1am, and Saturday 10/29 from 8pm to 12mid.

There is free parking for the Green Mill in a lot just west of the building. Head west on Lawrence from Broadway, and turn right at the first street you come to (Magnolia). Make an immediate left into the parking lot on the NW corner of Magnolia and Lawrence.

Since the Green Mill has no kitchen, they have no problem with people bringing in food. I would suggest that you pick up some food and get to the Mill between 7:30 and 8:00. Get a table or booth in the front section and enjoy your meal. Then you will have a seat right in front of the band, where no idiots will come in later and stand in front of you. There is a Mexican restaurant, Fiesta Mexicana, just north of the Mill, and a great Chinese restaurant, Silver Seafood, across Broadway (east side) and a bit further north. Directly across the street, on the NE corner of B'way & Lawrence is an Ethiopean restaurant. On the SE corner is Starbucks.

The Mill will be cool for the first set, but during the first break, it will FILL up with people, not all of whom are jazz fans. This is when you'll appreciate a seat up front. If you sit at the bar, you'll see the first set, but then you won't see the rest of the night, and there is a lot of talking and crowd noise. Maybe Liebman's audience will be different, but I wouldn't count on it.

And last but not least, here is the text from an email I received Monday:

PM Woodwind invites you to attend a special clinic with Dave Liebman

When: Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 1 pm until 3 pm
Where: PM Woodwind's "Space Around the Corner" - 707 Washington, Evanston, Il

STAY after the clinic and try NEW Keilwerth Saxophones. Bring your mouthpieces. All saxes will be available for purchase. This event is free to all.

Visit Dave Liebman at: www.daveliebman.com
Visit us at: www.pmwoodwind.com

Hope this info is helpful!

The little woman and I are going to try and make it out on Friday.

I think I'm out of town, for sure on Saturday. However, I saw Lieb's group with Jamey Haddad (+ Juris & Marino) at the Green Mill several years ago and it was terrific. Amongst other tunes, they did some of the things on New Vista. Very nice group. Juris is terrific on guitar, btw.

It was ear splitting loud though, boy was the P.A. turned up that night... first time my ears were ringing after seeing live jazz in a club setting.

I know I'm teaching or I might have gone over.............really looking forward to it.

1987 I was in the Army Band and Lieb came to Louisville and did a clinic. He asked if anyone knew the So What Chord. My buddy told me to go up there. I did and played the first 8. Lieb complemented me as a piano player. I said I was a tenor player and he went into a whole thing about everyone playing the piano.

A tiny little thing but it was my first time be right there with a truly great musician and it changed me a lot. I've been a fan for 25 years now.

He told me that after being Phil Woods neighbor for quite a few years, Woods finally came up to him at a festival they were doing and said, "Sounds good, man". I thought it was interesting that even Liebman feels the need to be 'validated" or respected by the elders. He said the same thing about Lee Konitz being there listening to his group at the Vanguard.
I guess he felt by saying to me that I sounded good (I know to take that with a grain of salt), he was passing that on. It is fun standing there playing with someone that played with Elvin and Miles thinking maybe some of that magic will rub off on you.

Well it was all I hoped it would be.

For me it was nearly 25 years give or take a month or so since the first time I saw him play.

Things have been really tough the last couple years and the horn nearly went away.

The good news is the fire is back. Its going to be the soprano for a while the tenor has too much bad baggage right now.

I took notes on the first set. I'm going to write my first concert "review" when I get back to St. Louis.

I had a great time at the jam and they let me play on all the tunes but one, soprano tenor stayed at home. I made some new friends and played with some excellent grad students from Northwestern.

I think I have some stuff to share.
