He's at it again. Oh and for the record, I'm pretty sure he read the other thread that I created called "David Benoit explains what is Smooth Jazz" because I sent it to him, and we here at SOTW, we are the reason he has almost 600 views because if you look at his other two videos, they have 170 views combined so congrats!

Doesn't Benoit have better grammar skills than that?
To David's credit, he does posit that "there ARE two kinds..."

It goes downhill from there...

He attempts to speak with great eloquence but the message is weak.

Too funny.

"Shame on Pat Metheny..."

"It's not right for a musician to publicly trash another musician..."

What is Benoit doing then?

I think that according to Benoit's view, all music is good music. Because for everyone that plays music of any kind at any level, there's at least one person out there who likes it at least a little. Crappy punk bands made up of 17 year olds that only picked up a guitar 2 months ago have fans. If they have fans, it must be good music right?

So if all music is good, then none of it is bad, and that just doesn't make any sense.

I didn't see the video, but I don't find that hypocritical unless he's outright insulting someone.

I assume he's talking about the way Metheny publicly trashed Kenny G as a musician...

How about when Liebs publicly trashed Branford when he joined Sting?

The definition of good from the video:

"Kenny G has...ah...well, ah...has...well I'll just put it this way: he has a lot of fans, and those fans like his music. Therefore his music is good music. It's good because he's appealing to these people's souls and to their minds and their hearts."

Thus, Mr. Benoit, regardless of what one says or how one says it, it's good because lots of people like it and it appeals to them. Is that the gist of it?

So folks, no need to worry: Stalin, sugar, cigarettes, sunbathing, etcetera are all good.

Whew, that's a relief.

Oh, I had a peek into that thread at that time.

I still don't have a clue why this guy's inane comments should matter to anyone? I've had more well thought out discussions of music with the 12 year old kid who lives next door.

I'm just regretting that I paused Miles Davis playing live with the second quintet in order to listen to the drivel in that youtube video.

So, wait a second. JazzItUp, who posted the first thread, sent that thread to Benoit, who then made ANOTHER tape in response? Is that right?

OK, got it. JazzItUp, confess: you ARE David Benoit, right? And you're having us on?:D

I just feel so . . . violated, and . . . used:binky:

Meanwhile, it looks like the thread about the Canadian dollar is gone! It lasted about an hour longer than I would have ever believed possible.

No JIU is not David Benoit--but JIU should definitely use a neckstrap (see avatar).

I have heard Mr. Benoit on two occasions. One he played his own compositions.

The other, he played in a good rhythm section. He is a fine player, and can keep up with just about anyone, not stellar mind you, but a highly competent player. I guess he's a pretty normal west coast kinda guy, that sells albums.

I just wish he would stop his embarassing interviews.;)

Blah-blah-blah-blah... Is this guy mentally handicapped? If I didn't hate cliche's so much I'd throw out the old "Opinions are like a**holes..." riff! This is a useless topic. Music is an art! Why do people spend sooooo much damn time on Kenny G! People please! Yes, the guy is good at what he does, but why does every single conversation about jazz have to boil down to KG's quality of playing. Squash it! If you like it, good for you! I think even I did at one time, cause it was new and fresh. Now, not so much. thank you for letting me vent... that's enough.:bounce:

Works for me.

"Good" music is subjective.. what's good music to one person and not to another, for the most part, doesn't really bear any kind of physical repercussions (with maybe the exception of volume or frequencies in the extreme.. that kind of stuff).

Things in excess like Stalin, sugar, cigarettes, and sunbathing have all been proven to have damaging consequences that are far worse for your health than smooth jazz.

Despite the infamous Smooth Jazz Manifesto, I basically agree with Mr. Benoit here:
  1. Absolute standards for music are indefensible.
  2. The tight connection that sometimes arises between audience and musicians can be of immeasurable value to them regardless of our personal tastes.
That doesn't mean we should swear off judgments about music or the music industry. The world is a better place because we all have tastes.

Two other things:
  1. Mentioning Pat Metheny by name was unnecessary and hypocritical IMO.
  2. I still didn't think I got 5:21 worth of stuff to listen to. Perhaps that's just the nature of video blogging.

Isn't anyone going to ask the magical, musical question, "why is jazzitup doing this"?

Why would you send the SOTW info to the guy? And why follow it up with another thread like this?

I think, sir, you are a provocateur.
