Hi, I've always been a "blue note bebop obsessed" kind of player,
Last week I plugged my 12M bari to a Line 6 HX FX guitar effect pedal.
I haven't figured out yet how to use effects in a band setting, but I think it could be interesting as long as it will be musical!
I have used a delay in the first part.
A bit crusher and a pitch shifter later on.
What do you think?

That's awesome, bb! Great playing, and very creative use of fx on a standard. You make it look simple, which I know from experience it ain't.

You've inspired me to order a Zoom Multistomp to add to my own every-growing pedalboard.

Very nice, well done. You sounded a bit like Slam Stewart (singing one octave over his bass solo) in the part just after 1:36.

Thanks for sharing. :)

Thank you everybody!
@ZootTheSim I don't know the multistomp by zoom, so I can't comment about its effect quality, but it has ton of effects! An important thing that I have experienced: if you want to use the overdrive/distortion you have to set a gate as a threshold point to avoid the larsen effect. The problem comes not while you are playing, but when you are not blowing: the microphone will capture the sound causing the larsen. If you set a threshold point to mute the effect below a certain db output it will solve the larsen problem. This could be a solution, but I am still working on it.

@mrpeebee thank you! I remember an album with Don Byas and Slam Stewart in duo. Incredible! Byas is a saxplayer that I truly admire.

@sandster What does "neato" mean? Is it just a slang word for neat? I am italian, I am not a great english speaker...

Gotta say that's one of the most TRULY enjoyable and fresh vids I've EVER seen anyone post here. Seriously. I was hesitant to push the play button at first, thinking "oh great, this is going to be an overdone mess", but far from it. You were very tasty with the usage of the effects! Thanks and keep it going!

bb - I’ve listened to your video a couple of times now. Couldn’t get into it the first go’round, but I’m liking it more and more. This last time, I overdubbed the background in my head, and could hear much better what you were playing over. Hah!

Any chance of looping the whole progression, then layering on it? I need to try it myself - never have, but you’ve fueled my interest.

Thank you!

Thanks bb, that's good advice, though I generally avoid too much distortion or overdrive. Bit crushers, ring mods and harmonizers for sure. I ordered the Zoom mainly for its reverb, delay and lo-fi effects. Along with a new Eventide Mixing Link pre-amp, it replaces my TC Helicon Voicetone Create, which will go to my vocalist. The TC's a fun and versatile old box, but it's not really designed to chain to other fx, which caused some impedance mismatch problems at a recent gig.

@jgreiner thank you, I usually don't like saxophone and effects. I am trying to develop a sound concept with effects. I don't want to jam over looped sound drones , I want to create something musical when the effects have an interaction . A great example is Jimi Hendrix on Voodoo Chile. The wah wah is not just an effect, it is pure expression. The effect becomes a tool to make music. Try to imagine the intro without the wha... It's impossible! Pushing a button to do weird sounds just to sound "different" is very easy, but does not attract me. @DrG I will try to loop something in the future maybe, I don't know. In the video I played the Caravan changes. The only different harmony is the major chord at the end, it remembers to me a little touch of a Bach corale ending. Of course Bach used it better... Haha!

You're most welcome and my compliments were truly deserved! I agree about saxophones + effects, but when done tastefully (of course that will widely vary in opinion!), I think it really adds to certain types/styles of music. I'm doing a Steps Ahead tribute gig tomorrow night and dusted off my old DoD Envelope Filter (guitar effects pedal) to play on some tunes. It's fun and I think it'll add to some of the things we're doing. Well, at least I hope it will!
Looking forward to hearing more!
