hey all, real quick

i am entering a concerto competition and am starting to get pressed for time and am looking for a piece to play for it. According to the rules, the piece has to be minimum 15 min. i was going to do the villa lobos which is 11 min, so chalk that. Any suggestions, thanks

1) Are you absolutely sure it's a minimum of 15 minutes and not a maximum? Generally there would be a max time limit, not a minimum.

2) If that is the case, Eric Ewazen's Concerto for Tenor is a nice piece and is nice for tenor.

So do you need a piece for Tenor/Sop or Alto?
What kind of rep have you played?
How much of a time bind are you in till the competition?

Those questions will help us be able to help you :)

it says 15 min minimum which is why im thinking the villa lobos wont work. Im looking for a concerto for any horn alto, tenor, sop (not bari). Um and as far as what im playing now, im currently working on the desenclos (prelude cadence et finale), HArbison (san antonio), Gotkovsky (brilliance) and Yuyama (divertimento). i have a bout a month to put just 1 mvt together for the comp. ill end up learning the rest later. thanks guys

With Band or Orchestra accompaniment?

If Band, the Dahl springs to mind. If you only have a month, however, I can't imagine any major work getting the attention it would need for a competition in a month.

Husa Concerto for alto saxophone and Band? Again too short, I think.

Glazounov and Ibert fall well short of the 15 minute minimum. I believe Florent Schmitt's Legende would be too short as well.

The Dubois and Tomasi Concertos would be suitable. 1st movement of Tomasi might be good; I don't think it is as technically tricky as it first looks, and there is a nice variety of slow very lyrical and exciting fast playing, plus a nice cadenza.
1st movement of Dubois would also work, for similar reasons to the Tomasi. A month is not a long time, however if you're playing Desenclos etc then technically at least they should be OK if you put the work in.

Try the Larsson Concerto it's about 18 minutes long and is a very good competition piece
Tomasi would also be a good piece to play

Definitely do the Tomasi. It's a doozy, a real show piece. It's one of our few "competition winners". A friend and I entered a concerto comp both playing Tomasi, and we both won- they couldn't choose. Good piece. (Actually in the end, for the sake of the program they asked me to change :( Oh well. Still a good piece)

If you have the altissimo you could try the Frank Martin "Ballade." I have a recording on my CPU that is 14:53 -- certainly stretchable to your minimum if you play your cards right.

You could still do the Dahl, as it is for "Orchestral Winds" and not "Band." The orchestra doesn't have to bring in saxophones or euphonium and can accommodate you just fine with its existing personnel. The first movement of Dahl also wouldn't be too hard for you to learn in one month.
