So I started a year ago in the spring with a tenor, then added a bari a couple of months ago, and then just this week scored a tenor and a curved soprano off ebay, and I have an offer out on a bass, too! I guess I'm addicted! Anyone else going for the "whole set"? The contrabass will have to wait, I don't happen to have $23,990 just lying around lol

Good for you! I own sopranino through bass. I love subbing for swing fever on alto , tenor and baritone . I hate playing the same horn all the time. I even hAve 2 baris a selmer super action 80 serieI and a Rampone low Bb. Also play clarinet and bass clarinet

You could simulate a contra by putting a pickup in your bari neck and using an octave doubler. I experimented a bit with this on tenor (using a microphone, just to see) a while back, but events intervened and I never got to the point of buying and installing a pickup.

Of all my hobbies, music is unique in that I haven't acquired a lot of instruments.

Cameras, watches, etc., I could open a store. However, I do use everything I have.

For serious music, I have:

* one (1) tenor sax
* two clarinets
* one keyboard

Started on soprano, moved on to alto then tenor then bari. Seeing hints of a pattern here. Aaand just sold my first bari to one of my biggest soprano heroes in the beginning of it all. Not sure whether it means a circle is now completed, an equilibrium accomplished, or is it just collateral damage from emerging mushroom cloud of low frequencies? Either way it has to stop now [SUP](and by now i mean bass)[/SUP]!

You've been playing clarinet for 50+ years according to your signature line, what kind of clarinet collection do you have?

Well, that's 50 years since I started, wasn't practicing the whole time, mostly off, but I've got 3 Bbs (all cheapies), 2 basses (one Bundy cheapie, one Buffet Crampon low C), and one contrabass (Leblanc 7182) for the clarinets. I was a bass and contrabass player back in school, tried picking it up again 20 years back, but the horn needed repair. Got that fixed a few years ago and it's been off to the races since. :) I also have too many guitars and bass guitars to even attempt counting, plus and assortment of keys, flutes, recorders, and penny whistles. :D

Is your contrabass clarinet a paperclip type?
The one I used to play in school was a paperclip, but this one is the long straight kind. Here it is next to my Cabart a' Paris Contrabassoon:

(oh, and I forgot to mention bassoons and more recently, oboe too) :D

Thanks for the idea - haven't installed a pickup yet, but here's my bari mic'ed and then run through the octave down on my Helix effects unit, just for fun. Quite glitchy, could be cleaned up with practice and probably some effects tweaks. Mega-farty!

Thanks for sharing that, B'. Welcome to the wonderful world of saxophones.

I, too, have been playing winds for a half century - bassoon and tenor sax were my ticket to college in the '70s. I am past my collecting phase - but I get it - and already started downsizing my guitar inventory, but saxophones remain a passion.

Enjoy the quest.

George

P.S. Tenor - It's all that matters. :twisted: :bluewink:

I’m waiting to see what happens when you realize that you need to find The Mouthpiece for each sax.

Oh, my...

Yeah, been through that once on my bari (now have 5 bari mouthpieces and my current favorite is the cheapest one lol). Hoping to get lucky on the new horns and find something workable a bit quicker. :)
