Whats the difference between, lets say Dmaj7 chord and D7 chord? I thought they're the same, but they don't sound the same when I try them in Band in a Box.

So, the scale for Dmaj7 would be: D E F# G A B C D? Is this right?

What is the corresponding scale on the D7 chord then?

Thanks.

Dmaj7 would be: D E F# G A B C# D.
D7 would be: D E F# G A B C D.

They typically do not operate in the same way. There is a tritone (F#-C) sounding in D7 that gives it more crunch. If you analyze chords using roman numerals, you will start to see common things in how these things work and sound.
