Hi. I just bought a bunch of "Flying Goose" alto reeds. These were advertised on Eb. You've probably seen them. Five boxes of 10 reeds each cost me about $33. Shipping was free. I thought, what the hell, it'll be something to talk about. So, incredibly, in about a week, I receive, from Hong Kong, the reeds. They're #2 1/2. Too soft. Scissors, snip, snip...I actually did this twice before I found the resistance I wanted. I've spent an hour or so now on this reed and it's working OK. I've got 49 more to try out. I'm awaiting another package of tenor reeds from the same source and am very interested in trying these out too.
Has anyone else tried these? I'd like to hear some other feedback.

Not too worry Buddy...:bluewink: I've used them for sometime (Ri Yin, Flying Goose, Shing Hy...) and they are decent enough... and so far I am still alive :)
If we could go to a Sushi bar and grab a pair of disposable chap-stick (in the pack) then it's good to go with these reeds...

The reeds themselves might need some "break-in" and some "personal modification", but they are good for me so far...

I have had some chinese reeds which didn't work to well, then I got some " Shanghai" reeds (brands don't mean much since the same factory can produce dozens of brands) with one of my Taiwanese alt0s and they were quite spectacular. I was very surprised.

I don't wanna turn this into a "political" thing but... the truth is the truth.

China has pretty much zero regulatory controls in place for anything they produce. Hence the poisoned baby formula and dog food imported by the US from China which sickened and killed people/dogs. Toxic drywall used to build homes in the US, etc. I'd rather just pay more for established brands.

buddy lee: I know exactly how you feel. I guess it's my scottish penchant for saving money, plus some curiosity I had about these reeds. I was really surprised at the quick delivery. One week from China!

I, for one, would never ever admit to using chinese reeds.

And let me just say that I don't have them or use them.

Now, about the disposable chopstick thing...

Life is too short for me to worry about stuff like that (maybe even shorter soon, I hear you say :) ). China is so huge, that such incidences are minuscule compared with all the Hoi Sin sauce, chopsticks, harmonicas etc that don't actually poison you. Hopefully without also getting political we al know that these rogue or careless manufacturers get dealt with very harshly by the justice system and the "zero regulatory controls" referred to are hopefully becoming a thing of the past. I think we will see Chinese prices going up very soon, all new factory builds have extremely stringent environmental and health regulations. people will argue that they can be got round with bribery and as in any country I'm sure that can happen, but according to the boss of one Chinese factory I spoke with this is no longer practical.

I wonder if people also worry about the controls in place for products coming across the mexico border.

Anyway I'll concede it's none of my business if people decide to boycott stuff from a country, at times I've done the very same thing myself so it would be hypocritical of me to criticise so I don't. I was just curious.

There are now some very fine mouthpieces coming from China, and while the possible threat posed to my own enterprise, which cannot compete on price, is a bit scary I still welcome the opening up international trade and especially the opportunities for so called third world nations to get a slice of the pie.

(Was that political? Sorry if it was)

.....and actually one doesn't have to go to exotic countries to find very bad things happening. I won't even comment too much on American scandals such as this

but will mention a scandal about pesticide being used in the growing of Xmas trees in Germany-Sauerland which was exposed by a local television with the implication for the raise of cancer in the immediate vicinity of where these tress (which then go to many households and put out their fumes in the houses) Video in German , music ( at least some) by our member CooolJazzz
