Charlie Rouse really got it.

One of the best things about listening to Monk has to be Charlie Rouse's maniacal style that compliments Monk's compositions so well.

I'm a big fan of Rouse. He is definitely one of the most underrated and under appreciated tenormen.
Yeah, Rouse played Monk tunes in a way that should be studied by anyone who wants to play Monk tunes.
His sound and concept fit monk to a tee.
I love his krazy lines and phases!
Charlie added so much to the overall Monk sound....
Was that a Metal Otto Link Super Tone Master?
Yeah, I thought Coltrane was good with Monk but man, Rouse and Monk. The perfect combination. Awesome. Simply awesome.
It's a pity that Rouse didn't have the opportunity to record more, and more broadly -- he was worthy of a career that was not so completely attached to Monk. True, he suited Monk completely; but he could play other things too. We know this, of course, but it's easily forgotten because all that now remains is the small body of his recordings. I love his "Taking Care of Business" album. And on this tape, he's "hotter" than he generally is on the Monk recordings, seems to me, with some Don Byas in his tone, that surprises me.
Please check out Charlie Rouses group "Sphere"
They are awesome!
"Unsung Hero" is one of the Great Cds in my collection. It is Rouse playing mostly standards Stella, When Sunny gets Blue. A must own CD.
I think Rouse is fantastic,too.

As early as 1946 [on those sides with Fats Navarro] you can hear he was
already as much a modernist as Dexter Gordon,Wardell Gray, and Getz in
his harmonic and rhythmic awareness.

I would've loved to hear more recorded output from Charlie during this period,
he was definitely underrated in that 50's period before Monk.

I used to have that. What happened to it? Your copy doesn't have my name on it somewhere does it?:D
Rouse always sounded great with Monk. One thing that amazes me is how he can play so unabashedly sharp, and still make it work.
