"Just when you think you're out.....they pull you back in again". It's kind of funny, but the touring band I played with 15 years ago has needed a sub for their ailing horn player - they're still together after all these years. I have not played regularly for over 10 years. They called me for a few shows and next thing you know I'm doing some pretty big shows (for me that is). Opening for "Toots and the Maytals" 2 nights and "Huey Lewis and the News" for another. The News show is at the 5,000 seat Bank of America Pavilion in Boston. I'm having much more fun now than when I played for a living.

Glad it's a positive thing for you. I have nightmares about getting called back with one of the bands I used to work with.

It was an old band member that got me back into it. An opener for Huey was one of the first "big" shows I did with them. Enjoy. If your experience goes like mine you'll end up immersed in the whole sax thing.

Amen. I shudder to think of what our "chick" lead singer looks like these days (30 years later). She looked like Stevie Nicks back then... Hmmm, Stevie looks a lil' rougher these days too. In fairness, I've added 30 pounds and lost my hair in the meantime.

Here in Arizona they use the same photo on our driver's liscenses until we hit age 65. That next photo hits your reality like a ton of manure.

I made sure to look really wasted and didn't shave for a few days when I got my DL. That way I'll always look better than my ID if I get pulled over. .

Let us know how this works out. My similar experience has been fun - and varied. We've been treated like dirt by some headliners and told to stay out of the green room, and others we have shared the experience, made friends, met great (and famous) musicians and then carried the party from the venue to the hotel or after party when the show was over.

Fader - I remember it well - I was a full time pro for 11 years and have opened everyone from Joan Jett to Cheap Trick. Had a lot of fun back then. I can't do too much of it now as I have a heavy day gig and a daughter to tend to but I've done few over the last month and it was really fun - I'll drop a note after these shows. I'm playing on their new single as well so we may get on the air in Boston

The tenor player with Huey, Rob Sudduth, is a friend of mine. Good player with a fun band.

I've seen Huey a few times - love the spirit they bring to the gig - just joy and love for what they are doing. Is your friend the guitarist that doubles on tenor? He kicks *** on both - what an accomplishment to be able to do that

I've been shedding to get ready for these gigs. Currently on vacation in Martha's Vineyard (where I used to live and the band was based). I've started showing up at some local gigs and shocking the crap out of everyone - this **** is fun. Putting in 1 to 2 hours a day every day since Friday - what a difference. I have to be careful - I don't need to shed my $100k+ day gig for a $10k club gig

Played the first date with Entrain opening for Huey Lewis - what a great gig. They treated us really well - long sound check - plenty of stage and production - Great mix. Highlight of the night was meeting two of Huey's legendary horn players - Johnny Colla and Johnnie Bamont. These guys were so down to earth it was mind blowing. The credits between the 2 of them include Sly and the Family Stone, Van Morrison, Tower of Power, Temptations - need I say more? total legends. Trying to add some pics

Yep. This is the challenge to balancing this stuff. I work hard, am a good father, and manage to balance in the paying gigs from time to time. But I always kick myself when I've spent 2 hours at my day job desk looking through a set list, listening to stuff on youtube to get the changes, etc -- caution, warning! haha.

I didn't know that their horn player was ailing. Last I saw tim I worked a bill with them it was Hilary Noble and a younger guy (can't remember his name). Hope whoever it is recovers soon and in full health.

Glad to hear you're enjoying being back on the scene. I personally had to ditch the original scene for the private scene in order to tend to the family.

Hey Swamp - I get that. They have a great player named Kosei now - he is feeling better and has returned. It looks like I may continue to do some dates as the 3rd horn with an emphasis on the background vocals which are a real need and something I am experienced with. I did 2 shows with them last week - opening for Toots at the Melody Tent and the Music Circus. Bought myself a Samson 77 wireless to fit in better. Had a great time. -- Rob
