I've been slowly working through the 140 Aristocrat (346xxx) I bought earlier this year, and am at the place where I need to do something about the bent upper stack rod. I've seen Matt Stoher's videos on how he straightens them (thanks Matt! Hope all is well in your new venture!), but haven't taken the plunge yet.

So now I'm seeing a post-buyout (double-oval bell engraving) alto for parts on CL, and am wondering if it's got the same 0.111" diameter rod. The asking price is worth it even if the rod is the only thing I can use. I'm sure someone here knows if it's the same... how many parts are still common late in the run? Come to think about it, would an Elkhart work?

??

Thanks.

I echo the above...might work, might not. A new rod with proper threading only runs about $25 from a tech.

Or if your existing rod isn't badly buggered, the same tech could probably straighten on a bench motor.

In priority:

First, straighten what you 've got.

Second, if it breaks or something goes terribly wrong, make another one.

Last place is buying a horn of similar appearance from the same manufacturer and hoping this one particular part is the same. There are all kinds of running changes in manufacturing, so that's basically a total gamble. It might be that this particular part was exactly the same for 50 years, but it equally might be that it wasn't.

I had both a 140 and a Big B altos
all parts and keys was interchangeable, fitting perfectly and without any gap
