Doe anyone have an original facing Brilhart hr they could measure the length of (meaning length of the entire mouthpiece)? I'm trying to figure out whether one I've acquired has been filed back at the tip. The butt of the reed extends past the table a good bit. Trying to decide whether to keep this one or return it. Thanks!

How does it play?

Pictures?

I cannot imagine that a 'piece could be filed back as far as you suggest and still work.

Mine is an early one, s/n 43219, but not so early that it has the large font serial. Anyhow, the total length is 3 15/16 inches, or 99 mm. And, BTW, it is a tenor mouthpiece.:)

Thanks Peter! This one is 5x,xxx away so they're pretty close. It's 96mm, and 3-4mm is about the length of the reed-table overlap, so I suspect it's been shortened. Just what I was looking for -- thanks again!

Dr. G, refacers do this sometimes when they have to open up a piece and don't have enough material at the tip to work with. The shave some material and move the tip rail back. I think it affects the sound and the resistance, but when the reface was done poorly - and this one was - it can be difficult to tell what the problem is until you fix the curve. And then you can't return it.

I don't have a Hard rubber one but I measured some Ebolins and they range from 96.33 to 97.06mm and my 4 digit Tonalite is 99.63mm if that helps. I wouldn't be too sure on it being shortened but the main point is how it plays. Also, they can be shortened to remove a nick on the tip.
