I've been transcribing Brecker lately and I'm having a hard time figuring out what he's doing in his modal lines. I'm starting to think he's pivoting off of Trane subs, but I'd really like some input.

Huh?? To which Brecker songs are you referring? "Trane subs" are pretty unique sounding. I really can't think of any Brecker tunes that use them much at all. Not that I've really been focusing on Brecker lately, but he used a lot of altered harmony and a hallmark of his playing is moving motives (some say "licks") around in patterns, such as moving motives in whole steps, or in 3rds, chromatically, etc. He was also a pretty thematic player, especially later on.

Way back when i was transcribing alot of Brecker I was hoping to make a short catalog of typical "Brecker licks" . . . . you know, like you can for Bird Licks and Trane licks ... turns out his vocabulary was waaaaaay more varied than you could ever imagine.

I think you got it wrong, he's actually pivoting off of BRECKER subs.
