Can anyone explain to me how my tech could effectively install a brass band around the shank? In the past my tech has done this for me, but he shaves off a lot of the shank to do so and I don't want to risk altering the sound or value of the piece. I found a Great Neck NY Tonalin to replace my Ebolin, and I want it banded before any cracks occur. Thanks in advance.

Installing a brass band adds mass - it'll likely lead to the perception of the player that the sound is different, even if what's coming out of the horn sounds the same.

A good tech can band with carbon fiber. Less weight and very strong.

Is this for alto or tenor?

In any case, you can improvise an effective band two ways: get a hose clamp from an auto parts store, or find a ligature to fit the shank.

I use an Eb clarinet ligature on my alto Tonalin. You can cut the ligature to make it fit nice and neat. On the tenor I use a (hard-to-find) streamline tenor lig. (Best of luck there.)

BTW, is your username related to Larry Nozero? I was a fan of his. Great player who is missed.

Thanks for that advice, it is an alto piece. I'll look into that.

Yea my username is related to Larry Nozero. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but his jazz albums were some of the first that I even listened to and he sort of inspired me to take up jazz saxophone. I later found out that he was somewhat of a local legend and mentored my teacher. Are you from Detroit area?

A year or so ago I had Will Grizzle in the Atlanta area install a ring on the shank of a Brilhart Tonalin. It's a black synthetic compound; IIRC, he said the ring was made of a material called "Delrin". He would also install a brass ring on request, but seemed to think that the Delrin did just a good of a job on the Brilharts. And it's cheaper.

Peter Ponzol is using Delrin to make some mouthpieces now: http://peterponzol.com/mouthpiece_info/mouthpiece_information.htm

So is Saxscape:
