My repair tech did the same for my Mark VI soprano. He bend the neck and silverplated the horn. He is a master craftsman with over forty years experience. It is not an easy modification; there is very little area to work with, the bend is right next to the octave, and you can't bend the mechanisim. I had never seen another one until now. For me the horn is easier to play, more comfortable, and balanced. He did this for me almost twenty years ago when Yamaha came out with curved necks.

It always catches the attention of other saxophonists when they recognize it's a Selmer.

For shame Marty... I never figured you to be the type to kiss and tell.
It was a year after Lucille Armstrong kissed me, and subsequently died.

You know what they say: Once you...

I remember seeing a MkVI soprano on eBay about four years ago which had had lots of custom work done to it. A curved neck, modern-style palm keys and modern Selmer style left pinky keys.

I wish I had bought it ! Has anyone else seen one like that ?

You could always buy a Yamaha 62R and get all of what you are looking for except the Selmer brand name!!!;)

I have played both. They feel different because of the in line palm key mechanism on the Selmer. I can't hear much difference in sound.

I've heard Emilio Lyons (Rayburn Music, Boston) did it. I met him in '80, he's still a genius.
I can confirm that. In a conversation (years ago while I was a student at Berklee) Emilio told me that he set-up Branford with the Mark VI soprano in question. It had been modified with an aftermarket bend in the "neck"... It was not a one-off or experiment by Selmer. A previous owner had this job done - it required having the octave mechanism modified and re-soldered... The horn had found it's way back to Rayburn music, and was for-sale. Emilio said he "gave" it to Branford b/c he liked him, and thought he would make good use of it. Guess Emilio was right!?!?!? I love Branford's soprano playing...

does anybody know what make and model soprano Branford Marsalis plays?
Ive heard its a Yamaha with a fixed curved neck that they no longer make. Does anybody know what model it is exactly?
I've heard he uses Cannonball soprano and tenor, but I've also heard he uses Mark VI.
