In pop music, Freddy Gambrell's intro on Benson's reworking of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" comes to mind.

I also like the intro to King Curtis' "Do you have Soul Now?" I don't remember who played it--- was it Tommy Flanagan? It is on the "In a Jazz groove" Album.

+1 on Parkers Mood - and Bird's own soulful call after that is of course a classic. What about John Lewis on Bird's Barbados? Those simple little trills so completely set the mood.
I actually wouldn't call Roland Hannah's piano solo there an intro - he is really playing a sort of 'hors d'oevre' solo - a great one at that.

In the film " Lets Get Lost" Chet Baker is appearing on some TV programme in the US. What looks like the houseband play the most amazing intro, the pianist hits the downbeat and Chet comes in ...it is one of the most magical soulful things I've ever heard.
