Hey,
I'm in high school, and i'm getting pretty serious about playing jazz. I have a YTS-475 that's been mine for 3 years and i'm ready to buy a professional saxophone. There's a Sam Ash by my house that had a refrence 54 avilable so i played it for a little over an hour. I liked how it played, and i wan to go with a selmer. I just wanted to know your opinions about the new selmer tenors

I like the series IIs better than the 36 and 54 that I tried. Series IIs are very underrated. The 36 and 54 I played were at a Sam Ash near me.

Get an older one if you can afford it.

**turns on flame shield**
Bic Lighter - $0.79

500# Propane Tank Rental - $318

Knowing when to turn on your flame shield - Priceless! :D

Silly thread.

Play them and get the one you like, they are all incredible just different.

What do you want to play on it? This might help your choice. If anyone has anything bad to say about any of the models then they are just too closed minded and probably not that intelligent.

Just my 2 cents

As you've probably noticed, you're not getting a general consensus that will help you, ie there is no "best" Selmer tenor, it's all a matter of personal choice and one person's reason for liking an instrument could very well be another person's reason for disliking it.

I am tempted to ask why you want a Selmer? The best way to choose a saxophone, as has been pointed out, is to try them all - and I would advise not just trying Selmers unless you have a specific reason for having to get a Selmer.

The worst way to choose a saxophone is possibly to ask on an internet forum, although it can be interesting to find out what it is people like about particular models, just don't go making any expensive decisions based on that.

Could anyone tell me when exactly did diplomacy cease to be a virtue? There are ways to put forward one's opinion wich do not necessarily include antagonizing the others this way!

The man (or woman) simply asked a question for crying out loud! Even if someone would have given a derogatory opininion on Selmers (and nobody did that) they would still be entitled to it without being called stupid or narrow minded?

I wasn't talking of Peter Thomas answer obviously....

I dont mind people not liking saxes but to tell somebody not to get a particular model without an explanation why is in my mind closed minded, it is important to at least explain why you dont like it as the person looking for one might actually like those characteristics. Its not like any selmer is a bad instrument so people shouldnt shut down models without good reason

yes, but that is no reason to say that a thread is silly (come on! It is a high school kid posting....) . To me one should always try to be diplomatic and allow a little slack. Internet, or written communication in general, tends to make things black and white while perhaps that isn't the intention of the writer at all (and I took this into account with your post as well). But although perhaps making friends on this site might not be your intention, you might want to resort to good old fashioned conversational good manners in order not to make any unnecessary enemies in future.
Good Luck with your playing and refacing.

Playing and trying different saxes helps to develop a feel for differences between then. It doesn´t have to be a Selmer. Yanagisawa makes great modern saxes that usually are well setup. I like the ref. 54 but myself have 2 great playing MK VI tenors I got rather cheap long ago. I friend of mine got a great playing used ref. 54 tenor in gold laquer that comes close to a MK VI but didn´t cost that much. Surely the resale value of a good MK VI is way better.
On alto I never played a better one than my ref. 54. And my sop.& bari are yani´s.

I would say that Mak VII and Super Action SI are underrated. I once played a serie I which was very easy to play from top to bottom (easier than My Buescher) with a very nice Selmer tone!
