Hello all,

Not sure if this has already been covered ad nauseum, but I was wondering if you all could tell me who are the go-to classical saxophonists to listen to?

Really looking to learn more about classical sax but don't know where to begin in terms of who to check out.

Thanks!

Probably been covered 100 times...? I don't know...

It's all subjective, but my favourites:

Aurelia Saxophone Quartet's members (Johan, Niels, Arno, Willem)
Claude Delangle
John Harle
Simon Haram
Vincent David

Rascher Saxophone Quartet
Harry White
Elliot Riley
John Edward Kelly

Obviously there are heaps more, but that's a decent start?
The tone of the four members of the Aurelia Quartet is incredible.

I think Dannel is a great young player.

Jim Romain ain't too bad, either.

I'm not sure how much his classic music is easily available but Gord Clements will provide you with some great listening.

Here's a rundown:

Otis Murphy
Timothy McAllister
Claude Delangle
Nobuya Sugawa
Jean-Yves Fourmeau
Eugene Rousseau
Kenneth Tse
Jean-Marie Londeix
Don Sinta
Joe Luloff
Raaf Hekema
Arno Bornkamp
Vincent David
Jean-Michel Goury
John Sampen
Sigurd Rascher
Fred Hemke

That should keep you busy for at least a few days. Those players all play a lot differently, so you should definitely check them all out.

Here is a thread discussing Classical Tenor Musicians.

There seem to be an abundance of classical alto sax musicians, specifically, that one is great for me cause I was not aware of the tenors! (Yeah, I know - waaaay behind the knowledge curve but trying to catch up!)

Would be good to designate the types in this thread as well, perhaps?

When ever I post a link to Kyle Horch playing soprano, there are always comments on his beautiful tone, so maybe listen to his playing.
Ran down a clip of Flotilla Ensemble and wow, Kyle Horch is wonderful soprano player indeed! His fellow member Naomi Sullivan is very good too, and the whole ensemble is top notch.
