Been using my cheapo ART MP Tube pre for a year now. Just a couple weeks ago I decided to change out the Chinese 12AX7 tube and swapped in a Groove Tube 12AY7. There is more headroom and sounds a bit better. This got me into thinking it's time to maybe throw down on some newer/better preamp that won't break the bank. I like the MP1 for it's small size and it fits on a stand I have and would prefer a small size like this as opposed to going the rack type size.

The single channel grace or the True Systems P-solo are very good. I would stay away from tube designs at this pricepoint. Honestly I would go transformerless unless your willing to spend more also. My advice for what its worth is wait until you have 5 or 6 hundred to spend otherwise you're not really stepping up much.

I have a Sennheiser 421 coming and EV RE-20 on backorder. I'd be using these on a mic stand in addition to a clip on/wireless, which right now is just an Audio Technica ATM350 and a Samson Airline 77 wireless, which I have read is basically the same ATM350 mic capsule. Ideally I'll have the wireless so I can move around and the mic stand mics for more dynamics and tone from the top stack.
