I like guys who can play great melodic lines in ballads, rather than just playing really lines over the changes.

Who do youi think are greatest ballad players - alto or tenor?

maybe Dexter, Scott Hamilton, James Moody?

cheers!

Besides Ben Webster and Lester Young, I like Arnette Cobb. On alto, Charley Parker and Johnny Hodges. I have the Ballads album with Dexter Gordon. Great stuff as well.

I like Dex and Coleman Hawkins in this respect , also Wayne Shorter and Bird from BIRD WITH STRINGS, but I think Klaus Doldinges stands head and shoulders above anyone else I have ever heard when It comes to playing pure melodic lines on a ballad..sheesh...he even plays wonderfully melodic lines on fast tunes. IMHO.
