I got this Berg Larsen Scoop Bill 115/2 Offset SMS and it seems to be hand finished, nice thin rails, some rust on the table but denim pattern visible under sanding job.
It does not have any marking indicating to be refaced after market, is this possibly factory hand finished?
Plays GREAT and feels maybe a bit less than .115 tip, I have no means to measure it precisely.

Supposedly they are 0.05 under the marked tip opening but my 100 measures 0.098 with feeler gauges so it can be less too or even right on the money. Looks to me like someone worked on that to polish it up and get rid of some of those pits on the table but appears to have left the rails and tip alone.

That Berg table looks a bit rough to me..I recently got a Berg SS scoop-bill .110/2/M no offset (actual .105) Mine does look refinished but unsigned, the table looks almost polished smooth, flat as glass, reed sticks like glue.. No sign of cross or denim mill marks and like yours the tip and rails are super thin and perfect.

Oh well who cares, the thing plays good as it looks, classic sound !

So many of them are simply based on the Berg designs anyway but just jazzed up (pun unintended) to look Fresh, Now, and Blinger (is that a legit comparative adjective?. Don't know and don't care....it's my English and I like it) than the old warhorses. However, logic says why pay $600 for something that's just a ripoff of what you can get for $200 to $300? Generally speaking if you find a clean denim table offset Scoopbill or Bullet Berg SS, it will be a great performer. You just have to take the time to find the right reed partners for it and it will play any way you want from screaming paint peeling to mellow modern jazz like the old guys played. RnB, Soul, Blues, Free Jazz, Bergs do it all as all the greats who have played them have proved. Lenny Pickett wasn't playing some booteeky blingy copy, nor were Clarence, Junior, Sonny or Wardell. See this list I posted as a thread back in 2017. Personally, I wish someone it were a sticky, but somebody other than me has to request it I think. It's a good reminder of how well these mpcs play and all the types of music they are good for.
