I'm just starting Jazz on alto after a few years of classical playing in my school band. Can anyone recommend any good jazz books/exercises or advice. Thanks!

" Jazz Conception " by Jim Snidero is a good one .
Once you've listened to Bird, you'll want The Charlie Parker Omnibook.
Aebersold Volume 1: How to Play Jazz and Improvise. Also, his free jazz handbook. That's how I started.

You can get both at www.jazzbooks.com
Well I've tried all of the above, and I found Tim Price's free exercises right here on this website to be the most helpful. The Omnibook is awesome but I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. And the Aebersold Vol 1 is kinda boring if you ask me. I'm using Greg Fishman's Jazz Saxophone Etudes right now and its certainly not boring, but its aimed at intermediate and above.
