I again have the honor of choosing the B&I TOTM and for the Oct. 2018, and have selected the 1931 Cole Porter song “Love for Sale”. The chorus is written in the familiar
A-A-B-A format, however, instead of the common 32 bars, it has 64 bars.

It’s a great tune to play on sax and over the years it has been recorded by numerous vocalists and musicians and has become a true jazz standard. I look forward to hearing interpretations by members at all levels.

“Love For Sale” charts for C, Bb and Eb instruments as well as a variety of backing tracks can be downloaded via this link:

Among the numerous jazz recordings are:

Good news for the November B&I TOTM: our member ailmont will host that month. :)

That saves us some issues finding a new host at the end of this month.

Other members who would like to host a future TOTM (B&I or normal) are of course also very welcome, drop me a Private Message if you want to be on the list.

Your box link crashes out on iPad with iOS 12. Don’t know if it’s the app, the new iOS or tbd but definitely a problem.

Love this tune.

John,

It seems to work ok with my macbook air - I'll check with my IP savvy grand daughter.

Is anyone else having a problem with the box link?

OK - Time to get the game started.

Here is the link to my first take (backing track is Aebersold Vol. 112 - tempo = 176). Once again, I used my old style ribbon mic in an attempt capture a "vintage sound and feel".

As always, I welcome all comments.
SSD, very nice recording, good full tenor sound and some very nice and fluent lines in your improvisation. The backing was a bit too long for my taste, so I did yesterday some takes with shorter 170 bpm backing. Have to find some time to check what the 'least worse' take is before posting!

Thanks for listening.

Also, I agree about the length - as with most of the Aebersold practice tracks - it's too long.

I look forward to you interpretation.

Here's a 240 BPM version of the melody followed by some mindless noodling until I realize that I ain't cuttin it and shut it down.
I feel your pain ...
I've made a couple of attempts at the same tempo, but as soon as the head is done I crash and burn after a couple of bars.
Then I tried recording the solo separately, but that was even worse without a lead in ... :(
I might be sitting this month out.

But enough about me ... yours, Gary's and Peter's takes have all been great !

Brendan,

Maybe you could give it try with a slower backing Track.

Thanks Brendan! Didn't feel confident to be honest, but glad you think that cones across. Just annoyed I kept hitting a major third over a minor chord....
