In another return to SOTW, I have decided to come out and pick one of my all time favorite tunes.

Written by Nat Adderley, and performed spectacularly by Cannonball and the full quintet, I've selected Work Song!

I love the simple head on this tune, the whole flow really just sounds wonderful to me. Plays well at slower tempos as well for those who need to slow it down.

Here is the sheet music I threw together on MuseScore (lemme know if I made any mistakes). View attachment Work Song - Bb.pdf View attachment Work Song - Eb.pdf

Sadly, the only backing I could get my hands on right away was here on Youtube:

I'm waiting on my Hal Leonard "Adderley" book to get shipped so I should have a better version by the end of the month.

Can't wait to here everyone's versions!

Let me start with an old combo recording I made back in 1999!

- 'Work Song' (Bob Session combo - Early Babbitt 8* - La Voz medium):

Only some tenor in the intro and ending, no solo. But instead some fine clarinet, alto, baritone, vibraphone and drum solo's on the way!

Also have a solo tenor version with backing track from October 2014 which I will share later this month.

Showing how great the tune goes slowly at the beginning, Lots of great tone in there! Very great harmonizing too, loved it. That's a great group you had then. Digging the solos. Thanks for sharing!

Great start and inspiring me to keep on practicing away!

Thanks Jared. :)

That was indeed a very nice combo to play in. Unfortunately it stopped around 2005, our band leader (the driving force) wanted to stop because of [his!] age.

Since 2006 I play first tenor in a nice Big Band, but I still miss that old combo!

Sad to hear that the combo is no longer around. I'm sure that was a blast. I'm still hoping to get back together with a group someday soon.

I'm on a overnight shift at work today, and sadly their computers have locked down everything except just the basic forum. I'll have to listen to any new recordings tomorrow!

Here's one from one of the SOTW gang.
This is absolutely shredding. Just kept the same upbeat pace running the whole time. Might have to steal some of these ideas to spice up the head too!
