Hi everyone.

It's my pleasure to bring you this months TOTM and after Bill's very successful choice last month I hope this one will prove to be equally successful.

'I Wish I Knew' is a beautiful tune done as a Bossa on this Aebersold recording but feel free to add whatever backing track you desire if there are others.

I'm really looking forward to your takes on this and will reply to every single one.

Best, Alex

I am not familiar with this one Alex, but a quick youtube search brought up a great Coltrane version!

Thanks Jared. Now that's what I call reference material. And what a beautiful piano intro by McCoy Tyner.
Very well played - I've never been a huge fan of Coltrane's tone, but here it is much more pleasant than usual.

That is such a beautiful track. Keith is the most incredible player and I use his playing as an example to students on how to pace a solo and how to not wander all over the place in terms of range. His control and passion combine to make the most heart wrenching solos. And as someone on this YT video wrote even his intros are works in themselves. Thanks for the link Michael.
I'll certainly bear this track in mind when I'm recording today. Alex

I don’t know anyone who swings harder than Nick B. I saw him live in Blackpool in the UK one time back in the early 90';s with a local rhythm section and he just laid the whole place flat with his energy and drive and endless ideas. It was quite a remarkable gig. And as is often the case with guys like Nick (Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh spring to mind) the piano player shut the lid after a few numbers. And when you listen to how he handles this months tune here you can see why he's one of my very favourite Bari players. Excellent track. Thanks for sharing. Alex

Here's my take on the Aebersold track I posted at the beginning.

It's not flash or fancy and I'm not trying to play down but rather just trying to play it as nicely as possible and adhering to the chord changes as they are played in this version.
It was quite nice to set myself the task of playing the head in the lower octave in which it fortunately sits just right for alto.
I've also created a slow fade after a few choruses. I thought 6 minutes of me warbling away would be more than enough for anyone.
I'm looking forward to your takes on this over the next month.
Best, Alex

Beautiful soft and subtle Alex! Love the laid back playing on this, definitely showing how beautiful the tune can sound with the simple but well done approach! Thanks for kicking things off with this wonderful rendition! I hope to follow suit soon!

Interested to talk a little theory on this one. On the Bb Sheet specifically - the Intro chords B-/D- have Pedal E/Pedal G underneath. This is the 4th of the chord, does this make it sort of like a B-sus4 chord? or does it have minimal impact on what is played during over this section?

If you look at a tune like Maiden Voyage for example which consists of the same chord / type the scale is still the same- Dorian - for basic playing application. Why not play it on a piano or record the one chord and play over it and see what sounds good to you? The minor/major third contrast major 7th are all interesting. It's in this situation such a short time to play over the chord you may want to start by finding a few common chord tones that link the chords to stretch your lines from one chord to the next.
