I'm an American living in Beijing and looking for a new alto to buy. I'm on a budget of about 1000usd and trying to find a good sax. For that price in the west I can find a plethora of quality used instruments however in China not so much. Searching the forum and the net I found many good review of Bauhaus saxes, and could import on from the UK for within my budget. Now I am very hesitant to buy a sax without play testing it. Is it worth while to get it or not. Also to give you an Idea what I can find here within that budget.
Countless Chinese horns (tried them sound bad)
Jupiter JAS 769
Some unknown Taiwan Brands
You may be able to get a Bauhaus with a good return policy. You should contact SOTW member, Pete Thomas. He can tell you all about Bauhaus saxophones and can probably advise you on whom to buy from.
I can't tell as much as some other people who have had them shipped and I believe did get a very good deal on the shipping, but I do own a soprano and baritone and can thoroughly recommend them.
IIRC they did the big shipping discount to compensate for overseas buyers being less likely to take as good advantage of the return policy, but I would advise you contact them directly, as they are usually very qood at responding.
I can't remember the exact URL, but google for woodwind and brass ltd, oh I just thought, can you do that on Chinese Google?
Oh Yeah I can still check google. I checked out the website for woodwind and brass. According to their website the shipping is 23 pounds for shipping to China, but I'll contact them directly for more information. Thanks for the help.
If you haven't seen it, there's a detailed write up on the BWs on Palo Tung's website. (justsaxes.com)
FWIW: I think the BW you mean has the "pink" copper finish. I have a copper plated alto (not BW). Anyway, when I first saw the bright colour of it, I thought it looked too glitzy or even "girlie," but onstage it actually looks really good...or so people say!
Why not take a weekend and fly to Hou Li (saxophone town) in Taiwan. There's a bunch of us who'd love a report!
The phosphor bronze sure looks pinkish to me. Whatever you want to call it, it's surely different from the regular lacquer colour of the key work, which I presume is why the maker describes it as "Bronze Body/Lacquer Keywork." Anyway, I was just suggesting that these horns probably look more natural in person than in the pics, based on my own experience of buying a two-tone alto sight unseen.
