I'm looking into to buying a metal mouthpiece for bari and just a generally better jazz and classical mouthpiece for alto. What have you guys found in regards to both of those that are favorites?
Also, I need both high quality classical and jazz reeds for both horns. On the bari I'm looking for a fat sound production from both the reed and the metal mouthpiece.

Hello. Kinda too general, your initial post.

What horns do you play ?

When you say "fat sound", that can mean a lotta things.

Do you feel your horns are lacking in tonal quality (or rather, your current setup is lacking)? If so...are they...what ? Too reedy ? Not punchy enough ? Not dark enough ? Too narrow ? Do you need more articulation ? And, is that YOU in the avatar ? Etc....

For the Alto, do you want ONE m'piece which would serve well for BOTH classical and Jazz, or were you planning on two ?

Salida, CO...my daughter's BF lives there....

The bari I play in a Yamaha and the alto is an Alpine (not sure how popular of a brand that is, but it's a pretty good horn. Much better than my student Conn had been).
I don't feel like it lacking tonal quality (the bari that is) just that I would like a bigger, darker sound I guess.
For the alto ideally I would like one that would do well for both styles, but recommendations for both are appreciated.
And yes that's me in the avatar haha

Who is your daughter's BF or what age is he? I grew up here so I might know him...weird.

....Dang.....okay, then.........

Have you tried Meyer Rubber 5's or 6's ? Those are a very popular pro-calibre m'piece and they do provide some nice roundness and darkness to the tones (for the Alto, I suppose, since you want a metal m'piece for the BigHorn). It's not gonna be a common answer to the Q of a classical m'piece, but I find them to be very flexible for a wide range of contexts....

Vandoren V16's are another popular model....although they tend to be a Jazzer's m'piece while the V5 and A20's get more accolades from classical players...

Also, Selmer Soloist or the S-90 can also serve as a good dual-purpose....

As I said, if you are inclined toward metal on the Baritone, I can't help you there; but am sure some other folks will chime in.

Jeez, this is terrible...the guy's first name is Devin, he's 19 or 20 yrs. old (soph in college)...handsome lad, red hair...she's there visiting with him as we type....:| and I dunno his last name; I'll find that out (what a lame Dad am I.....)

I would be inclined to ask why you're only considering metal bari mouthpieces. Although sometimes you can only find a particular model in metal (which would limit things), the material itself has little (if any) impact on the way it sounds.

If it's a size issue (not everyone likes sticking the end of a football in their mouth), there are some pieces out there that are more slender than the chunky profile some people think of when they hear HR or plastic mentioned in relation to baritone mouthpieces.

But if you're after a metal piece, I would suggest looking into a STM Otto Link. I can't guarantee you'll fall in love with it, but I can say that I use one with all of my bari's (and my bass), and it works quite well for me.

Can't go wrong with a guy named Devin :bluewink:.

Thanks haha
I will definitely look into the rubber ones you recommended, I'm pretty happy with my rubber one for the bari at the moment, but I'm always open to try some new mouthpieces. I have a feeling I'm just going to do that with all the recommended on here and just play around and see what I like best.

And I think I may know him, last name Bughi? I know a guy with reddish hair in town by that name so...

I'm just looking for a little better action I guess. From the metals I've played around with in the past it just feels better to play, and it is nice to have something smaller than the rubber one that's on the bari at the moment.

And personal bias? haha

I second the Otto Link STM suggestion. Big fan of them my self, though I do tend to like older ones.
