Hi - I play alto and tenor sax's and was looking to take up bari as well, however I am quite short (actually I prefer "Petite") and when I tried a bari (Trevor James) I found my right hand couldn't quite reach the bottom pinkie keys.

This is probably a dumb question so feel free to laugh and ridicule me - but I don't suppose anyone knows of any make/model of bari that has the keys arranged a little more compactly?

Yanagisawa baris have a compact key layout. But I don't know how they compare to TJ in that respect.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to get a hold of a Yani to see if it fits.

I also heard that Steve Goodson bari's have a compact key layout, although the only UK dealer is at the other end of the country from me.

My problem is not the size of my hands, but the length of my body and arms. If I didn't have to extend my right arm and wrist so far I'd have no problem reaching all the keys (iykwim).

Hi, and welcome, a handy hint here it to put something in your profile to give people some sort of clue about where you are - county level rather than street.

It won't stop the americans suggesting you visit a technician in Wisconsin - but it might help the Brits suggest brands and or stores where you can try stuff.

If you can locate one, get a B&S. I just got a Dave Guardala bari (a B&S, basically) and it has the most compact keywork of any bari I have ever had or played.
BTW, sounds incredible!

The Wind Section in York Place had a used yani in the store a couple of weeks ago. I think the price was £2050.

My daughters are 'Petite' and have found that the student/intermediate line of Yamaha Baris' are comfortable and pinkie keys within easy reach. The smaller of my girls is barely 5'1', and has short fingers to boot. I know Yamaha has a "school horn" rep, but if the horn fits and sounds good,,,, Play it!
