Ok, time to put the beginner back into the beginner thread. I didn't really have the head down completely, but it was passable for a first go, I hadn't checked out the backing closely before recording and for some reason I thought it picked up at the B section after solos, kind of messed me up so I just deleted the end and faded out. Maybe I will have a chance to post again and, if history is any guide, it won't be any better.

This was recorded on my iPhone using the built in mic, so no studio-worthy recording quality.

I haven't practiced regularly since last November (to give you a idea of where I am). I was able to get some sporadic practice sessions early Sunday mornings before everyone got to the office and a few outdoor practice sessions when the weather got better.

This is on my new Phil-tone Intrepid mouthpiece that I am amazed with, I still love my Lamberson, but I find that I need some serious practice time before that sounds anywhere near decent. The Phil-tone makes me feel like I have months of regular practice in in terms of ease of articulation and having a clear tone. It is brighter than the Lamberson but I don't feel like I am going thin anywhere (other than when I tried for some altissimo that didn't quite come out). Definitely a good purchase (my first new bit of gear in over ten years) and will be a keeper.

Edit:
I deleted the link to the recording as I listened back in the cold light of day and realized two things, first, it was an awful recording and I am embarrassed by it and secondly, I am mentioning a new piece of equipment in this post and I don’t want that excellent mouthpiece to be associated with a recording that I should never have shared.

sorry for the rambling drama guys, carry on…

Tomorrow will afford me a listening opportunity. Today afforded a little playing time. Still fighting my lungs a bit (cough has been worse since starting to play again). I muffed about four takes before getting through this one.

Very enjoyable take Thom. Didn't hear much of the lung issue here, strong playing with lots of energy and very strong and cutting bari-tone. Got some Ronnie Cuber vibes at moments, well done. :)

Dusted off my bari sax for this one, and I forgot how much fun it is to roar on it over a bluesy tune!
All the best to everyone!

You are SO right, sir!

Gotta bet that big guy up in the mix, though -- those Hal Leonard backings are LOUD (sounds like what this is). Hey! Was that a quick not to Alfie's Theme I just heard? I had nearly as much fun listening to this as it sounds like you did playing it. You stayed within the tune and yourself and drove home your message. My ears are pleased.

these relatively simple tunes really require some discipline to get right - well actually all tunes, thinking about it :(
Anyway, this is where I am so far

I will get round to commenting on the other offerings later, but appreciate any constructive - or non-constructive non-objective feedback. After my last outing, I have been focussing on trying to keep intonation under control..

thanks

I just happen to have a recording of this one. I'm on soprano, playing at a jam session in 2019. This is the first time I had ever played this tune and I had never heard it before. I was sight reading out of the Real Book in concert key and transposing. Loads of fun, very memorable! I was thinking of Cannonball while playing this.

JMoen: nice balanced tone on the alto! I don't know if it was intentional, but volume went down across the bridge as you were looking a bit tentative here, and then once or more familiar ground the volum picked up again..

MrPeebee: this seems to be a tune made for your setup, I was trying to decide whether I prefer the Link or Berg, but there is a case to be made for both. I love the way you approach the solo it must take a hell of a lot of breath to honk out with those tip openings. Nice touch on the harmonisations

Alex: A consummately professional recording, and there's lots to learn from it. I like the tasteful interpretation of the melody, the really 'pregnant' incisive tone, super tight rhythmically and the judicious use of lead notes and phrases. highly enjoyable !

Bayview: It sounded like you really had fun with this one.. great meaty tone on the bari, and I love the runs beginning low down, I never have the confidence to go for these, scared of skwaking.. If certainly didn't sound as if you missing breath support

Taragot: Very enjoyable, maybe the bari could have been a bit higher in the mix during the solos, but still get to hear the enthusiasm, very nice tone at the top end of the horn as well... makes me want to go for a bari version as well..

Adjusatone: pretty impressive sight-reading, you managed that pretty well, and interesting tome on the soprano, almost sounded trumpet-like at a certain point.

Michael_A: Nice contrast in ton between the melody and solo's, and really good solid bluesy solo, i'm personally not so sure about the EWI sound patch, but I never managed to get on with these electronic things anyway :)

@madav: Great transition out of the theme in the impro. Overall very nice melodic ideas and awesome playing!

so true!
@adjustotone: I read somewhere that one never should bring a soprano to a bluesjam. This is hogwash, and you are the prove. Great bluesy and swinging playing. Reminds me of Branford playing playing "White wheeled limousine" with Bruce Hornsby with that speaking quality. Great!
@ Michael: I love your first statement in the impro! Great blues playing on every instruments. Very expressive but also great timing and phrasing!

And thank you everyone for the nice comments about my bari honking! Have a good week everyone!

Dirk, thank you very much for the feedback.
About "my" first statement in the impro... I know why you loved it :)... because it's Lee Morgan's thinking. It is in my head from couple of decades ago.
So simple, logical and beautiful. So I did a short part of it to warm up my further noodling :)

Busy days. I've been trying to build up toward my final take, but haven't gotten there yet. But September is nearly over so get those takes in!

If anyone would like to host one of the TOTMs for October, shoot me a message!

Can't hear the struggle at all! You had such a great emotional sound in the head. Then ripping off some amazing licks! Flying around that big ol' horn! So cool to hear you shredding it up. Just great bluesy call outs surrounded by lightning! Nicely done!

Another big horn take. Made the head uniquely yours too, always great to hear some subtle variation. Love how you come into the solo hitting deep and low. I felt you really interacted with the backing, such a hard thing to accomplish with some of these tracks. Lovely Dirk!

Pure, soft sound really sounding amazing! Love the way you used dynamics on the melody. Just really sunk in with those lines and your great sound. The doubletime lines were awesome. Some great stepping into the blues and out into some more scalar approaches! Seriously epic playing! Well done!

Very cool! Love the sync at the beginning. Interesting arrangement I must say! Your solo is killer though. Love the way you can emphasize the blues but still add some really unique vocabulary. Over too soon, but an awesome little jam!

Keeping up with the trio of instruments I see! Love how soft you took some of those notes in the melody on alto. Always your own brand Michael, and really love the way you attacked the solo. I felt the blues pouring out! Awesome playing and great mixing!

Here's my take on it.

Great to hear you playing here again! Your sounding much more confident and pure in your sound than I remember. Rocked the melody and really loved the grace note usage. Your solo had some killer lines, really nailing the rhythm. Some bits did feel like you wandered a bit to find where you were. That's me 90% of the time, so I know what it sounds like :D. One suggestion, the alto sound doesn't mesh well with the backing. A bit of reverb and mixing could have added a great dynamic to your track! Thanks for sharing!

I think that covers everyone. Thanks so much for sharing! Still a couple days left in the month. I'm nearly done with my final recording, I'll hope to share it tomorrow or early on the 30th! It'll only be late for Alex and those in the future ;).
