Nice playing Jared & peebee

not sure why there haven’t been more postings on this tune, it isn’t a tune that I have played but I was able to read through the head fairly quickly and it’s a lot of fun. Trying not to hear Benny’s solo from the original in my head as that just isn’t going to happen for me.

I have had practice sessions two days on a row for the first time in a long time and today I was using a new mouthpiece for the first time in over ten years. It’s a philtone intrepid and I think I am in love, I have barely practiced since last November and this made me feel like I had been practicing daily for months. It sn’t a huge change from my Lamberson, but it just feels easier, I hope to be able post something soon.

Alex and Thom are way beyond me in terms of ability (who isn't!!), but I did have a listen to both and thoroughly enjoyed both. Hope you feel better soon Thom.

I had a proud dad moment this morning when my daughter whistled most of the A section to Moanin and said "remember that song dad"? That was after she had been noodling on her piano picking out melodies by ear, she is going to surpass me by a mile before she leaves grade 1 (she just turned six).

Ok, time to put the beginner back into the beginner thread. I didn't really have the head down completely, but it was passable for a first go, I hadn't checked out the backing closely before recording and for some reason I thought it picked up at the B section after solos, kind of messed me up so I just deleted the end and faded out. Maybe I will have a chance to post again and, if history is any guide, it won't be any better.

This was recorded on my iPhone using the built in mic, so no studio-worthy recording quality.

I haven't practiced regularly since last November (to give you a idea of where I am). I was able to get some sporadic practice sessions early Sunday mornings before everyone got to the office and a few outdoor practice sessions when the weather got better.

This is on my new Phil-tone Intrepid mouthpiece that I am amazed with, I still love my Lamberson, but I find that I need some serious practice time before that sounds anywhere near decent. The Phil-tone makes me feel like I have months of regular practice in in terms of ease of articulation and having a clear tone. It is brighter than the Lamberson but I don't feel like I am going thin anywhere (other than when I tried for some altissimo that didn't quite come out). Definitely a good purchase (my first new bit of gear in over ten years) and will be a keeper.

Edit:
I deleted the link to the recording as I listened back in the cold light of day and realized two things, first, it was an awful recording and I am embarrassed by it and secondly, I am mentioning a new piece of equipment in this post and I don’t want that excellent mouthpiece to be associated with a recording that I should never have shared.

sorry for the rambling drama guys, carry on…
