Articulation signs

I have encountered an articulation sign that I am not familiar - I presume it is either specific to saxophone or jazz/pop music. It looks like a U (upside down fermata without the point). Can anyone enlighten me on how this should be played?

We call that a "Deeoowee" out here in Utah, not to be confused with the "Dow" (curved line going down) or the "Dwee" (curved line going up). A short heavy note of course, is a "Dumb" (just kidding).:)

Hey, that would make a great jazz articulation. Mind if I use it? ;)
