I love Arnett and I love that recording. Those of us who saw him will never forget what a consummate and dynamic a player he was...

Here's a tune you wouldn't normally associate with Arnett. Billy Strayhorn's Isfahan, named after the city in Iran, and usually associated with Johnny Hodges. It's a wonderful performance of a wonderful tune:

One of the most expressive tenor players ever .

I think Johnny Griffin had to follow him in the Hampton band when he was, what .. 17 years old ?!?!

Arnett has been one of my all-time favorites for over 30 years. I wish I had the chance to see him in person, but I didn’t.
I’m so thankful like with many of the others greats, that we have all these incredible recordings that we can listen to anytime we want.

Actually Griffin and Cobb played together in the 1946 band of Hampton, see this thread:

Cobb made a big impression on Griffin, I've heard him saying that during a tour with Arnett and Lockjaw in 1984 (I've seen them twice during that tour in NL and did put some clips on YouTube). See these threads:

That's a pity Mark.

Cobb sounds good on the CD's, but hearing and feeling his sound on stage was for me a far stronger experience than what I get back from most CD recordings. I was lucky to see him about 16 times in NL, from 1979 (when I was 17) till the his last visit in the late 80's (tried to catch several concerts of a tour, he wasn't here every year).

Oh, yeah I knew that Griffin was in the band at the same time, sure.
What I meant was that he had to follow Arnett's solo's !
Hamp would always have the tenor battles going at some point during the show .

Art Farmer had to play alongside Clifford Brown in those 'battles' and he was really sweating up there .

I guess you've heard Griff's early recordings(from 1948 at age 20) with Joe Morris ? Sounds like Griff but I hear Cobb's
influence on him, for sure .

solo at 0:48

Solo starts around the same time

Yes, those become real 'show' acts, also because of some new idea's Arnett brought to the band (like throwing off the jackets during their solo's in those battles!).

Thanks for those Tryp, I think I heart them a long time ago but forgot about it. :)

Johnny sounds almost exactly like Cobb, especially in the first two tracks you posted. That's some sound he generated from the old Tone Master 6 he played in that time!
