I studied saxophone in college and earn my teaching degree in music - so I've fomally gone throught the 'classical' thing. I never joined any classical school - none would have me. And if I did get in, I would have been on detention and finally suspended.

In any case, I really enjoy playing through classical style etude books. I would never want anyone to hear my interpretations and of course it's on my jazz set-up - I long ago abandoned my 'classical' set-up. It's a nice break from the endless ii-V studies and running changes FOREVER. It's just fun and relaxing.

Are there any other basement (practice room) classical saxophonist out there?

I believe I am, too. Filching a term from conductor/french hornist Gunther Schuller, I see myself as a 'third stream' saxophonist. Third stream, simply put, being a synthesis of both 'classical' and 'jazz', both extremely wide-ranging terms in themselves. I prefer 'concert hall' to the term 'classical' in my articles.

I guess I count as one too.

No formal training but spent over 10 years in an oldies band playing rock sax and before that some jazz and big band.

At home, I also love going through the classical stuff but my collection is limited to some Rascher and Mule books.

I'm hoping to someday have a chance to play classical in public.

Playing in a concert band includes some classical but there are some specific orchestral pieces I'd like to play someday:-

Eric Coates' Saxo-Rhapsody
Michael Kamen's Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra
Franz Waxman's A Place in the Sun Suite
Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver: A Nightpiece for Saxophone and Orchestra (arr. Christopher Palmer)

- and I have sheet music for an alto sax and piano accompaniment for Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Now to find a pianist...

I may go practice in the basement in a minute. Merry Christmas! I just slept for five hours after a harrowing couple of nights with limited sleep and am now up and merry at 4am.

I play classical literature on my jazz setups, sometimes in public, sometimes even for money! Lynch me now! :yikes!:
