The sticky has fallen off. There is no longer a "Contact the Moderator" - at least not where I see it.

Does this mean that there are no more rules in the Marketplace?

Are moderators still relevant?

It feels like the wild west in here.

P.S. The new collection of emojies is lame, IMNSHO. What happened to my favs  and :borg: ?

First of all, the old SOTW moderators did hardly play a role in decision taking and execution of going to the new forum. Most of us are also confronted (like all members) with this and are still struggling to find our way and (new) role.

The sticky has fallen off.
Sticky does exist, those threads have a small pin in front of them. Check this:

There is no longer a "Contact the Moderator" - at least not where I see it.
This can still be done, but in a different way. You have to click on the three vertical dots at the top right of the post you want to report and choose the 'Report' option.
See for help information: FAQ

Does this mean that there are no more rules in the Marketplace?
The same rules should still be valid, but the new forum can's support all our old rules (technical restrictions). VSadmin is looking into that, we might have to re-define some of the old rules due to technical restrictions of this new software.

Are moderators still relevant?
The old SOTW moderators (like me) have now limited options and some things will have to be executed by the site owners admin account (VSadmin). For me that's also still unclear. Like mentioned before, this has been dumped over the fence, we now just have to deal with it as it comes.

It feels like the wild west in here.
I agree. That seems to happen often (unfortunately) with internet applications that go to other software.

.S. The new collection of emojies is lame, IMNSHO. What happened to my favs  and :borg: ?
I reported already some of the old missing ones and VSadmin reported that they can't be added.

The sticky has fallen off.
Which sticky?

I did remove a couple of stickies but only old ones no longer applicable (I thought)

The rules are still there, in fact now they should be more obvious.

All that has changed I'd the forum format, which is nothing to do with mods.

The rules are still there and in effect , the only one is about not editing the posts (which now serves the purpose to add , for example a lower price)

all the rest can be still found here (Frankly speaking, the entire rules thing should be cleaned uo and put into a way that anyone trying to access the marketplace would easily see, minimum post count and membership ( gives problems and people try to bypass it sometimes because they aren't aware of why they cannot access the area) and all the other rules.
I strongly recommend rethinking this because (and I've made this very clear in my signature)

the rules are here

I don't see a place for notifications. how does that work?
What do you mean by ' notifications" , if you want to add to the post, at the moment can't be done unless you edit, if you mean to notify the staff you have the report function ( three dots next to the post)

AFAIK the editing capability has been added while waiting for VS to sort everything out.

I have amended the rules to how I think it now is, but bear in mind we (SOTW staff) may no longer have control over the rules. yest to be confirmed how it all works so we may be as much in the dark as you are.

But still, the only rules are these ones:
Marketplace Rules

All members, as before, are welcome to report anything you see against the rules. Staff don't often get the time to vet every post, your cooperation is always appreciated. (NB: I believe the report link has been moved to the top right of posts)

There used to a lot of different rules dotted all over the place and very confusing so a couple of years ago I put SOTW Marketplace rules and Awareness may be out of date.

What do you mean by ' notifications" , if you want to add to the post, at the moment can't be done unless you edit, if you mean to notify the staff you have the report function ( three dots next to the post)
Notifications usually means notifications when somebody rerplied to your post or a thread/forum you are following. In your preferences you can choose to have these via email, alerts (in the alert box under your Avatar at the top, or (I think) push (if you have a compatible browser)

And when you follow a thread, you get this option for notifications:

You still can't comment on some one selling something that's overpriced.
That doesn't seem right in a saxophone community forum.
I do understand your point. I dont sell in the market place but I dont think it should be an open forum for people to attack sellers for their asking price. While I am not a fan of the, "Buyer beware" stance, I am also not in support of people attacking sellers for asking more than they want to pay for an item. In the past it has created some bad blood...especially when competing sellers dog their competition. I think the old rule of no challenges was good. I do miss being able to read commentary though.

I also agree with Whaler. If you post something for sale on a forum you should be able to answer questions on the forum. It is a forum after all. I have never been in favor of no comments on the For Sale section. I have seen a number of questionable items for sale over the last year but we have no way to ask a question or comment on the item. All I can do is walk away and hope none of our SOTW members gets ripped off.

OK, I will jump in on this just to clarify a bit, please excuse me for saying the obvious which is that

No price debating has been a rule since the dawn of time (see here 2009) and is not really relevant to the thread about "do the rules still apply?" I can see the point in this rule because it can be very subjective and somebody's ad chances can be ruined by someone who doesn't like them wanting to imply they may be ripping people off at those prices. However this really is a case of buyer beware, make an offer. Also bear in mind prices vary geographically.

I also see no commenting is mentioned in that 2009 post.

unfortunately ( that area 2009 post) is not accessible to me.

I too think that comments shouldn’t be part of the ads, questions can be addressed privately, if comments and questions were allowed than moderation would be necessary and that would make the forum a party in the ads which is , as said many times, it is not.

That doesn’t mean that one can’t open a thread referring to an ad and make it a public discussion BUT this may escalate into an argument which is something we’ve seen too many times.

Sorry, I hadn't realised the thread had been deleted.

here is the OP (from 2009)

Discussion Starter • #1 Jan 23, 2009 (Edited)

After much consideration the SOTW staff has decided to modify the Marketplace forum so that the members can post and reply to their own posts only.

  • As always, the rules for Marketplace Ads still apply in the Marketplace (well, save for #3; Do not argue asking price but you won't be able to do it anyway) - This said it did occur to us that sometimes, items for sale or for trade in the Marketplace give birth to interesting discussions but that's what the main forum is for anyway. So as long as it doesn't interfere with the current marketplace rules (including #3) there are no problems if someone starts a discussion about it in the main forum.
  • All comments, questions, suggestions and insults regarding for sale items should be adressed privately to the seller.
  • Sellers can still add corrections and missing or ommitted details by replying to their ad but as always they cannot edit their original post.
  • Sellers: if you did a mistake and want to re-submit your ad --> Report (
) or PM to your favorite SOTW friendly staff member and it'll be our pleasure to be of assistance
  • No bumping allowed, of course. You can count on your friendly SOTW Staff members to keep a watchful eye to make sure that doesn't happen. - Members can also still report posts (
) or PM us if you see illegal bumping
  • If you encounter any technical problem, please PM us or report in the Forum Problem Reports and Questionsarea. Again, it'll be our pleasure to be of assistance.

  • These modifications exclude the ebay experience, New Products announcement, sax vs. sax, Shipping, insurance & Importing and Stolen instrument marketplace sub-forums - That means: you can still reply to other's posts & threads in those sub-forums.

Ok. Now you can complain :D

Thanks, All, for the discussion.

I do hope that the Rules banner is restored, else there is little impetus to learn, much less abide by, them.

It would be useful to include in the new rules how to find the Report Post feature. It was not intuitive in the previous incarnation, and remains subtle in the current implementation.

It is subtle, (probably too subtle IMO) but is along with edit in the top right corner of each post.

Also in the FAQs, which is recommnded reading for anyone not sure of the changes:

But your point is well taken, and if we get the permissions to add a notice/banner to marketplace postings I will make it clear in the notice. I am in discussions with @VSadmin hoping they will let us do the notice,.

By "notifications" I meant PMs from anyone. Where do they show up?
They are in your own personal menu under your Avatar top right. Now called conversations (eith an envelope icon).

Notifications are when you get notified of a new thread. (This is the same as the old software I believe)

NB: it's worth taking some time to read the FAQs, although this software is getting a lot of bashing - much of it might not happen once you find out what it does better as well as worse. So it's really worth the time looking at those FAQs.
