I tested one a few weeks ago on tenor in an 8 facing. Played with strength 3 reeds. Really nice round and warm sound, but it could also cut through if you gave it some air. I just found it way too free blowing and prefer a bit more resistance to blow against. But it was a very nice mouthpiece.

All of his pieces are like that. Way too "efficient" for me. I don't know how people can play these things.

I was just answering how other players do it. Some have sent me free blowing mouthpieces to add resistance to the facing. I ask if they tried harder reeds first. Some have and some have not. Those that have say they did not like the hard reed sound or response. So I know that opinion exists.

The opposite happens too. Players like a free blowing mouthpiece and have trouble with resistant facings.

Has anyone talked about how Jody is using the chedeville rubber for these? I met Jody at a conference when the Chedeville came out and asked if he would make a lower cost option. He said he was considering making the Chedeville out of the HR jazz mouthpiece material. It seems he did the opposite, he made the HR out of Chedeville rubber.
*shrug*

Here is what it says on the Jody Jazz webpage.

“The HR* CUSTOM DARK Tenor is our premium line of hard rubber saxophone mouthpieces, where the goal is to make the most beautiful sounding and playing piece that we possibly can. In order to achieve this goal we started with the finest material used in hard rubber mouthpieces today, which is our proprietary Chedeville® Rubber. CHR (Chedeville Rubber) is a softer purer formula than regular standard hard rubber. This rubber imparts a rich warm sound.“

Ok, I got one after finding it in a shop in EU. Got an 8 opening. The sound is great. Warm, dark, lush and a bit vanilla like ;) Love it. Really great craftsmanship. For small jazz ensemble playing it is fantastic.

The only "problem" for me right now, is that it does not project very well. Have tried it with a big band, and in an acoustic quartet. Both times I felt I had to blow very hard to hear myself. Other band members didn't notice it though. I asked and they said it was sounding very good, and no problems with the volume. But as a player, I felt I really could use a microphone to hear myself better. A bit softer reeds helps a little btw. So for now I am trying different reeds, both strength and brands.

Above, someone referred to the missing resistance on JJ mouthpieces. I agree when it comes the traditional HR* pieces. But the Custom Dark has much more resistance if you ask me. The 8 opening has about the same resistance using the same reed on my older HR* 9* for me.
