The guys I play with use ipads but I'm seeing the Nook Touch for $100 and thinking this would be just fine if I could get my pdf's in.
The more I search the more complicated it gets.
I'm reading that the Nook has lots of HD space but you can only use it for books you buy at B&N.
Does anybody have experience reading charts from these inexpensive e-readers?

Most of the cheapest eBook players have no backlight so you will need a stand light in addition to the eBook reader. Most of them should handle simple pdfs okay and you can return them easily in most stores if it doesn't work as you want it. The new kindle touch seems to be the best eBook reader compromise.

Thanks for the isight MP
I bet the prices will be all over the board in the next few weeks and months.
At the moment the [email protected]$100 is a better buy then the Kindle(without adds)@$140
The Kobo is also @$100 but the Nook would be easiest to return at my local B&N.

I just read that you can't buy books on Amazon with the Nook.
I'm not really interested in buying things and that seems to be what all the makers of these tablets and e-readers want you to do. They seem to be little "Buy Boxes".
I really bugs me. Itunes is like that but it can be ignored.

The Kindle Fire is reportedly being sold below the cost of making it by Amazon because as you very well put it, they intend you to use it a little "Buy Box".

Have you searched for Android tablets alternatives?

Have you actually loaded sheet music on an ebook reader. I haven't been able to on my nook color.

I came across this post so I decided to create an account and give my two cents....

I would personally higly recommended the HP Touchpad. HP discontinued the production of this product in August and had a fire sale of it at $100 for the 16gb and $180 for the 32gb (was originally around $500). They were sold out everywhere within three hours. HP then decided to manufacturer one last round of them due to the high demand. People were buying mass quantities of themand selling it for 2x the price on eBay. You can now find them for around $200, which is what I had to pay.

It has a large 9.7 inch screen, which is much larger than those tablets at the same price. This is ideal for reading sheet music. You can simply use the PDF reader on it or use the Kindle program to read the sheet music, which is what I do. I immediately installed Android's operating system on it, since WebOS sucks. If you have basic computer knowledge it is a very easy process and there is good instructions and videos on the internet. I could always provide help also. Android provides great benefits for your tablet, such as the Android market....not to mention Android is completely free. You could even download a tuner for free from the Android market, and there is also sheet music on there.

If you didn't want Android on it, WebOS comes preinstalled with Kindle.

If you have any other questions or want further information feel free to ask....same goes with anyone else. I consider myself technology inclined and a huge Android supporter, so I know what I'm talking about and would love to help out other saxophonist like myself!

P.S

Apple sucks and loves to control and limit their users experience. They are so overpriced because their consumers buy into the brand equity they have created and they do little to know research about alternative products.

Just get an iPad. You need the extra size compared to a Kindle or Nook. Plus the iPad already has support in a number of Apps for wired and wireless page turns.
That's what I did. I tried the Nook Color but it was really too small(and heavy). The iPad works well and at at twice the price I'd say it was at least twice as good.
You also don't need to pay for the extra HD space if you have iTunes Match. I have access to about 100Gigs of my iTunes library and so far no problems with it.

Are you using a reading app? I've got the UnrealBook that my piano player set up for me with all our charts.
I've heard good things also about the iGigbook.

The standard Kindle , including the Kindle Fire are 7 inchers. Kindle does have a 10 inch tablet which is better and Amazon carries Realbooks in .pdf for some tunes. I haven't tried to download my own files yet so I can't speak to that. Maybe I'll try to find a way on my standard kindle just for grins.

not that im recommending anything but i have seen internet hacks to make the nook a full android device and you can run any android app. i think you had to register it at barnes and noble pre hack to let a bn account use it. then, its just like any android tablet computer at a much lower price. the problem is who to call with a problem. they did have instructions for restoring the old however so it may not be so bad. i think it voids warranty though. i never figured out if they could really tell after a restore of the old. i may do it to mine since i dont seem to be using it as much as i have in the past. there is a limit to how much fiddleing with electronics i can take anymore. i also think im out of warranty now.

I use a Kindle Fire as my primary platform for IReal b. The display is back lit and works very well on a dim stage. It has nice clean sound with a nice set of speakers for play-along for practice as well. Best Low cost/big screen ratio Android tablet solution I could find.
