Hello, size-wise alto sax reeds seem to fit the mouthpiece of an alto clarinet. Is something to say against the usage of alto sax reeds?

Just tried Yamaha 5C mouthpiece with 3.5 Fibracell Premium artificial reed. Works very well, so it seems.
Any other recommendations for that MPs reed-wise?

I use tenor reeds on certain bass mouthpieces. Just try it out. If you don't like the result, don't use the reed. You're in charge.

A few months ago, I mistakenly bought a box of alto clarinet reeds. It was the only box on the shelf among all the sax reeds, and even the shopkeeper was surprised it was there. But they play just fine on sax, so I'm guessing the reverse might also be true.

the alt and bass clarinet both can use saxophone alt and tenor, as much as a Bass saxophone can use a contra alt clarinet reed.

The difference is mostly in the length of the vamp.

Thanks, I understand it's all a matter of experimentation. Having so many alto sax reeds I guess I'll find some suitable ones for the alto clarinet. If it sounds right it is right, after all

I use alto sax reeds on my Basset Horn (alto clarinet mouthpiece). It works great. I've been using D'Addario and Vandoren 3's on my Selmer C* and Hite mouthpieces.

I know that years back David White told me that his alto clarinet mouthpiece was designed to play best with alto sax reeds.

I think over the years there have been many times that I interchanged alto clarinet-alto sax and bass clarinet-tenor sax. If it worked and fit the mouthpiece that is all that really matters.

Thanks for all responses. My current experience is, that alto sax reeds actually work better than the few alto clarinet reeds (Vandoren) I have tried (but then, I'm not such a great fan of Vandoren reeds on other horns as well, they are well made and all, but often too bright for my taste).
