For jazz I would start with a Meyer 5M or a Runyon Custom 5. If you have the chops you can always go with a larger facing. For classical I prefer the Selmer scroll shank pieces in a C**. Be prepared to adjust your reed strength.

I would reccommend a meyer 5 or 6. If possible try it out to ensure you like it.

Classical: In my opinion, go for the Vandoren AL3. Much less muss and fuss about getting a good one, they're all fantastic with pretty much little to no chance of getting a dud. They're becoming the new standard.

Jazz: Can't go wrong with a nice Meyer 5 or 6M, but you have to try a lot of mouthpieces. The Vandoren V16 5 or 6Ms are good choices. Remember, jazz pieces require softer reeds.

I play a Metal Yanigasawa 9 on my alto, It's amazingly bright and Very Loud! The opening is a bit too large for some players, but I'm used to playing Tenor and blowing so much anyways. It was about 100 bucks retail about 5 years ago. It does help to know what exactly you are looking for before we can really give you good advice though.

I love meyer but if you can, try a phil barone (ebonite), it's nice mouthpiece.
If you have the funds for this kind of jazz piece, do that. I own a NY6M and it rocks.

Hey I am player looking to upgrade my alto piece what would be some good ones to tryout because i am playing first alto in a few weeks in a band and need a different piece.

thanks
dave
Dave. I have used a N.Y. Meyer mouthpiece for many years& found it to be the best one I've ever used. Try one, either a 5M or 6M. Get a new one if no N.Y. is available. Good luck.
