trying to look for top punch, edge, loudness on the market, any other suggestions are very welcome. I play a Berg sms 1, it is a very dark but thin yet punchy piece with alexender superial DC reeds.... it's so dark that it even sounds like a tenor on first octave. i've read alot about runyons recently, so just wana see if any guys out here has done this comparison thing on both pieces. thanks

Out of those two, the Berg will be louder and edgier, and if it's finished well, it will probably have a better core than the Runyon. Note that this isn't neccessarily true, it's just my experience.

Also, if you want the loudest alto mouthpiece on the planet, check out the Brancher SOTW's own MojoBari re-worked.

He says it's the loudest mouthpiece on the planet, and judging by the looks of it...he has to be correct!

By leaving the "window" (that area) more evacuated, it apparently makes the mouthpiece have less resistence. I've played Jody Jazz DVs, and find this to be true. Those things start buzzing at the some of the lowest air pressures I've ever played. I myself don't dig that little of resistence though... I tend to overblow and like a little resistence to lean on when I'm playing, but others love that fact that it's super easy to blow. I guess whatever floats your boat...

i should try to use a cheap cheap mouthpiece and try removing the window and see if i can make a sound out of it.....hahaha..... how bout the edge and buzz, how does a mouthpiece do that job? i figured out that reeds are very important in that area, but don't know much about mpc

Jody got this long window thing from Phil Rovner who made his mouthpieces that way. I have an alto one FS which EZ perfected (see the mpcs FS thread.) It is pretty loud and free-blowing though a bit more contemporary sounding than I care for. Not super-easy to blow in a bad way IMO.

As long as the reed seals you can make a sound no problem. A Ronver lig works just fine, no need for a shoelace.

mr mojo,

besides the high baffle that effects the buzz/edge/brightness, the chamber effects how focus the sound is which effects how punchy they are and effects the overall brightness? wat are the limits in adding more baffle? waz the maximum of adding baffle before the piece is not playable?

See the EZ-refaced Rovner I have FS in the marketplace if you want this sort of mouthpiece. At .089" tip it's not quite as wide as Mojo's customized Brancher. Loud with edge but not thin, blows easily with a 2.5 reed.
