Practice, practice, practice! Work at least as much or more on style as you do on technique. I had my auditions a while back and ended up 12th out of 42 at state on tenor - only 2 make All-State, so I didn't make it. 12th, however, was a very significant improvement from last year (32nd), and the one main difference between this year and last year was that this year I really worked a lot on playing stylistically! Best of luck to you, let us all know how it goes! :)

Hey Colton, congrats to you!!! 12th is good especially in this state. I have had the pleasure of being able to work with the 1st chair guy last year and the 2nd chair girl this year.
Tombone+sax=life, Just practice hard and listen to recordings, find pieces that fit in the style of your etudes and listen to what they do, how they articulate and how they interpret swing, and any other style that you may encounter. In your improv, just aim for good clean lines, when judges are listening to you they are wanting to know if you have a good grasp of the changes and not how flashy you can be. Remember 8ths, triplets, and 16ths are your friends, as well as long phrases, use your guide tones, and have a good concept of time!! Good luck!!

Dang man did you try out for TMEA? Competition sounds tough. Would of been cool to meet someone on SOTW at San Antonio!

By the way do you know if Tyler Cummings tried out on Alto?

Trombone, you had your try-outs right? How'd it go?

Know your s**t forward and backwards, and in all thirteen keys!

I desperately wanted to audition for my All-State jazz band (probably wouldn't have made it) but my band director "forgot" to send in my application. So I had to settle for second chair tenor (out of two tenor players) in my regular All-State band (Oklahoma 1998), my senior year.

Good luck!
