Just commenting to say that it's one of my favorite tunes. Few things are better than Elis Regina/Jobim together.
Sounds good!

-Bubba-
Same here. I mean I understand why it's not a standard for instrumentalists, it's super repetitive and to me the beauty is in the progression and lyrics.

There are SO MANY beautiful versions of this tune on YouTube go listen.

I would add it isn't even a standard for vocalists.....I mean, it's not an easy song for singers. Takes technical proficiency combined with making it sound effortless. Few singers can go there, and many others wouldn't dare tread there.

There are indeed some good YT versions....Susanna McCorkle and Jane Monheit did/do quite respectable jobs with it, for example.

Agreed, McCorkle's version is the first one I fell in love with in the 90s. Poor Susanna.

Beautiful! Recording sounds great. I love this tune too.
If you listen very closely (and many times) to the Elis and Tom recording you will notice how many very subtle variations they do with the repeated phrasing. That studio video of them is one of the most precious musical recordings ever registered.

Thanks Guto! And yes the rhythmic variations break the monotony. I was just trying to remember the lyrics while playing and I don't think I did lol

I know....despair can overwhelm us, sometimes...a great loss to the Jazz world....

I've been trying to find a recording setup (mainly mic position + distance from mic + acoustic panel placement etc) where I sound "like me". I am just looking for feedback on how this sounds to you guys. Any feedback at all is appreciated.

BTW...very tasty ! There has to be a slight 'lightness' maintained when playing the melodies here, and you do a really nice job of that.....

Just curious which language lyrics did you study? I know it was translated into English, French, German? Other languages?
Interesting thing (maybe you know this - I didn't until around a year ago), Jobim wrote the English lyrics as well and they aren't simply a 'translation' of the Portuguese ones, since March has different connotations in N and S hemispheres. It's a different set of lyrics.

I'd be curious to know if the French and German lyrics ARE translations of the Portuguese or English, actually ?

Hi Jason. From my listening I can say that you seem to have got the positioning and balance completely right. That's a really nice tenor sound and very controlled as a performance. Whatever you're doing as far as mixing is concerned is working well. I guess the only temptation is to try and better it by adjusting levels and effects. If you do you've always got this as a guide. Great stuff. Alex.

Jason,
I really enjoyed it.

Very nice sound and it was just enjoyable from beginning to end.
Thank you for that.

We need good music to help keep up our spirits through this.

Very kind of you both and thank you for the feedback!

For the first time in a long time I feel it sounds like me. I'd always been pretty disappointed with my recordings compared to how I hear myself off of a wall for example.
I'm really happy for you Jason. I know how much that means. Have you thought about doing a recording of this months TOTM? Crescent. I'd be interested to hear how you'd approach that one.

I haven't but I'll listen to it. I just got back to playing yesterday after 3 weeks off
