So what do you guys think?

I'm looking into buying a bari to give my band/jam sessions a sexy new element. I used to play a $4,500 yanagisawa back in high school for a few years and I'm looking into finally picking up one of my own.

I've read a few threads on largo where people have spent $500 or so and have been moderately satisfied. Would I be making a mistake in picking up one of these for 3,200? I want a GOOD sax that I can hold onto for the next 30 years or so.

I'll probably end up going through a guy called Tom sparks, as long as he doesn't charge me a fortune. Can you guys recommend a few good brands for reasonable prices and experimental/jazz/rock/reggae/funk/blues/everything playing? It would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Saxby (My last name).

Edit - After using the fantastic resources this site has to offer, I've decided that I'll be looking for a second hand bari over the next couple of months. I would still love advice on what to look for/peoples experiences, as well as what you guys think of this Largo sax.

On my search for a new Bari I've been given the following price quotes for new saxaphones -

Selmer (Worth over 15,000) - 8,000 (I WANT THIS)

Yamaha - 7,350

Yanagisawa - 6,400 (This is also looking to be a good option)

Trevor Jane - 6,995

Jupiter - 3,900 - 4,100

All these offers have come from reliable dealers with plenty of industry experience and knowledge.

The Jupiter is more in my price range, but I'm looking for a more solid instrument that will last me over than 5 years. Looking for a Bari is harder than I originally expected. I may have to fork out twice the amount of cash that I wanted to.

I will probably be going with a new Yani for the 6,400. It's going to take a few months to get because they're in massive demand at the moment. I just need to sort my finances. The Saxes you recommended sound great, its more a problem of reliable availability for me.

I'm not sure if Ed did sell this. He never followed up whether it did or not. If I were in the market for a Bari, I would jump on it in a second. Look around a little, you can score a nice bari for well under your price range. You should be able to get a Tenor and a Bari for what you are willing to spend. Buy used, you will save.

Thanks Finnerski, I've sent an email his way so maybe I'll get lucky. I do agree that secondhand is the way to go. six and half grande is a bit too much for me and I just want something to play around with/use in the band/jam with people.

Any ideas on where to look other than these forums? I'm a bit wary of using Ebay...

Edit: - Can I please get your opinion on these sales? I would very much appreciate it!
