Can anyone tell me about the value of the 4**** Link

I have a friend that has a 4**** Otto Link.

How much is it worth?

Don't know if it's been worked on.

I'll look at it again the next time I see my friend.

My advice is if you have a question for a specific member, send that member a Personal Message or an email message instead of asking the question as a thread.

Re: Otto Link 4****

Not to be a smartarse here, but there are SO many variables.......
1. An old Link Four Star isn't as popular as the Tone Master, Florida, Double Ring, etc
2. Is it in original condition? Is the facing original? If worked on, do you know who did the work?
3. Have you played it? How does it play in its current state?
4. Not many people play the old Four Star model. Doesn't mean they're not worth anything, but realize unless it's absolute mint, with the original box, etc. the only type of person that would be interested may be a "collector".
5. If he's looking to sell it, do an Ebay search and see if you/he can find what a comparable 'piece is going for or amount one has sold for.

Having said all of the above, it may be "worth" as little as $100 and as much as $400 (give or take a couple hundred!). :dontknow:

Good luck with it!

Re: Otto Link 4****

Thank you Jgreiner . Totally helpful. That just about covers it. I doubt that he has the original box. I haven't played it.

I'll ask him to bring it the next time I see him and I'll take some pictures with my phone.

He also has a Barone and I'll ask him to bring that too so I can get pictures of that also.

What was that sound? Did I hear some ears perk up?

I can't imagine getting a Four**** for $100. The market price for any vintage Link, NY Meyer, etc, is waaay up in recent years. A $350 example might now run you $750.

I blame tenormen on the East and West Coasts, looking for a piece of the true cross and maybe a high-rolling investment vehicle.

Years ago I got an early '30s Master tenor piece for $120 - but only because it had been replated and then never refaced. The rails were so rounded and the table so uneven, it wouldn't play a note.

All the points John already mentioned in post #5 are important to know before your questions can be answered.

Last year Ebay prices on Four**** pieces where roughly between 255 USD (for a 2*) and 900 USD (for a special HS = Hawkins Special facing). Another important point is if it has the original Four**** lig. In some cases only a lig goes already for between 50 and 150 USD, depending on the state.

Thanks guys I looked at the mouthpiece yesterday and the ligature looked like dollar signs. That was the best Link ligature I've seen. He said the mouthpiece was bought new.

We were at a session and others were not too happy about me taking pictures with my phone and checking out the mouthpiece.

So I really didn't get to scrutinize anything.

I'm not going to to sell it here because I'm a new member and I just don't feel comfortable doing that.

Good to hear you may have something pretty nice there! For what it's worth, I certainly wouldn't hesitate selling it here as opposed to somewhere else (Ebay, etc). I've purchased a mouthpiece through this forum and it's done all the time here.

Good luck with it!

I'm a bit puzzled here: Otto Link Four**** mouthpieces where only produced between 1935 and 1940. Ofcourse somebody bought it new in that period, but is your friend that old that he bought it new :bluewink:?

- So are you sure that he really has an old Otto Link Four****?

Also, Four**** pieces where only produced in small tip sizes (2 till about 6), while most other pieces you list are monster tips (170/0 Berg is huge, I own a 150/2 which is already huge!). Does your friend play on those pieces or is he a trader?

He's 77 And according to your information there's no way he bought the 4**** new. Maybe it was new old stock. I don't know. I'll ask him about it. He buys everything else new I know that except a Super Balanced action relaq that he ended up selling for $3500.

I told him not to do it but a flipper put cash in his face.

He's still mad at his teacher that advised him to buy the SBA. He wanted a new VI at the time.

On another note I asked him if that old Link hard rubber mouthpiece had a signature on it at an angle. He said yes .

I wanted to call Indiana Jones and tell him I've found the holy grail. I'll ask him about it. He buys everything else new I know that except a Super Balanced Action (tenor ) relaq that he ended up selling for $3500.

Indeed, could have been old new stock. I guess he bought it begin 50's, when the Tone Master (the follow up model of Four**** Links) was already out of production and the Florida no USA's where the newest Links. I had something simular. Bought my first Link in a shop back in 1985 when current STM was already in production (since 1980), but I found out much later that my first Link was an Early Babbitt 8* small bore from 1974, so also old new stock. Didn't know that when I bought it.

Ask your friend about the tip size. When his Four**** piece has a HS (Hawkins Special) facing and is including lig and cap it could bring him lots of dollars for sure (700-900 I guess).

That HR slant 10* is indeed a killer. When I'm right 10mfan recently offered one for 1500 USD on Ebay.
