My son just purchased a Conn Director 27M with the serial number 16408AJ072. I asked before buying it if it was a Mexican model or had the "N" first in the serial and was told it is neither. Can anyone tell me more specific info about this model and what it should cost in "excelent condition"? I would also be interested in what the differences are between this and the, so to speak, student models are. Thanks for the help!!

Re: Information on Conn shooting star tenor sax

Actually, the new Conn 27M student alto is not a "Shooting Star" model, although it does share the official Conn name "Director" with its predecessor student sax model so called "Shooting Star" of the late 50's, 60's and 70's.

The 27M is a current production, Asian made sax offered by Conn-Selmer of the "Selmer/Yamaha" clone variety. As such, I think that you will find that it is more mouthpiece friendly, and ergonomic by modern standards than many vintage horns.

However on the flip side, the core tone may be thinner, and construction and materials can be iffy. If you do a search of past threads on SOTW, you will find information on these.
